Greetings from Japan

TL;DR version: Many cars! Very Japan! WOW! Such military.

I thought I would finally post since I've been lurking, unregistered, since late 2012.

I'm active duty Navy, currently living an hour south of Tokyo Japan. I'll be back stateside in about 7 weeks. My brother is picking up my black 2014 1SS 1LE for me this Saturday. I'll post up my trans-pacific experience buying a $36k car in the appropriate forum once it's waiting in the garage at home.

My family has a fairly colorful past with the GM Fairfax plant in Kansas City, starting with my great-grandfather moving to KS from PA to build the plant as a steelworker, then signing on as the first group of employees when the plant opened in the early 40's and was the last of that group to retire.I have the news article detailing his exploits to the same effect scanned on my computer at home somewhere if anyone cares to read it. My father works there now on his 33rd or 34th year. I lose track though I'm sure he's counting the days until his eventual retirement.

I've owned everything from a slew of 240sxs, 2 Eclipses, an 83' custom deluxe ¼ton that I learned the joy of working on cars from, as the stock iron 6 cracked and I swapped in a hot 305, finally ending with an 01' Buick Park Ave Ultra that I gave to my brother in 2010 when I moved out here.

I enjoy the community here, both good and bad, and look forward to contributing in my own way in the coming years.

You might see me around the Lawrence/KC Metro area for a week or three while I pack the other 50% of my worldly belongings and move my wife and I from Japan+Kansas to the Charleston, SC area between May and June.

p.s. I'm open to any sort of questions spanning topics from what life is like in the Navy, living in Japan, to what it's like controlling nuclear fission at the flick of a wrist (editing content for classification of course.)

CONGRATS on the ride, and Welcome to our happy little corner of the net, and to Camaro5. There is a BIG fridge on the back porch with anything you can think of in it...help yourself...of course only take what you can LEGALLY have. Make yourself at home on one of the big fluffy couches, kick your shoes off, put your feet up on one of the tables, yes we are allowed to do that, mom's, wive's, husbands, girlfirends and boyfriends here don't care....and take it easy.

oh...btw....every once in a while a food fight breaks out...so you may not want to wear nice clothes here.

Welcome!!

Controlling fission at the flick of the wrist? Must be an ET nuke. I'm an (I guess I should say prospective) EM nuke, stuck on medical hold after power school. Should finally be off to prototype sometime this summer. Good choice of color though I went for the jump to 2SS over the 1LE package. You coming to NNPTC or NPTU in June?

NPTU (626) my alma-mater.

I was 50/50 between Red Rock Metallic and Black. I had to have the Recaros, 1LE, NPP exhaust, and BA stereo with a budget of $37k to work with so I went with the 1SS and found exactly what I was looking for in IL. I like the fabric a little better anyhow and I used to do auto upholstery in my youth. It's not hard to pull the back seats/headliner/door cards and wrap them in whatever I want. Alcantara would be nice but we'll see what ends up in there.

Unfortunately the deal fell through. My brother got to the dealership and there was some body damage he was unwilling to accept the car with. He mentioned some suspension noise (perhaps from the car sitting for an extended period at the dealership?)

I'm off to find another dealer, hopefully one that has an allocation so that I can place an order for one. I'm having a tough time finding a 1SS in Red Rock Metallic or Black with the options that I want.

Welcome to C5 and thank you for your service I don't know if you could stretch your budget or how good your negotiating skills are but I found this:

http://www.castlechevycars.com/Vehic...MPG=2147483647

and they have 2 of them they are about 400 miles from the Lawrence KS area.

Nice.

Thanks for your help. I don't know if I can ask him in good conscience to go on another adventure like that for me. I'll be back in about 7 weeks or so and see what's around then.

I luck out because I'm eligible for the USAA member discount ($750) and military discount ($500) off of GM employee pricing. That adds up quick. Not a lot of negotiating on my end but that also doesn't leave much, if any, wiggle room on the dealership's end.

If you wait until you get to Charleston, not only do we get the discounts you mentioned but we are also tax exempt (us military types I mean).
