Deep Space Industries - Mining, Refining, Manufacturing.... no, this isn't Sci Fi

http://www.space.com/19368-asteroid-...ndustries.html

Excerpt from the article:

Quote:
A new asteroid-mining company launched Tuesday with the goal of helping humanity expand across the solar system by tapping the vast riches of space rocks.

The new firm, called Deep Space Industries, Inc., announced today (Jan. 22) that it plans to launch a fleet of prospecting spacecraft in 2015, then begin harvesting metals and water from near-Earth asteroids within a decade or so. Such work could make it possible to build and refuel spacecraft far above our planet's surface, thus helping our species get a foothold in the final frontier.

"Using resources harvested in space is the only way to afford permanent space development," Deep Space CEO David Gump said in a statement. Deep Space Industries will hold a press conference today in Santa Monica, Calif., at 10 a.m. PST (1 p.m. EST/1800 GMT) to unveil more details of its bold mission plan; you can watch the webcast live here at SPACE.com.
I am so geeking out over this

Here is the press conference that happened earlier today, long video but if you love this stuff as much as I do you'll enjoy hearing what they have to say:
Skip to ~2:30 for the start.

There are also a decent amount of Q&A vids on YouTube now as well, just do a search for Deep Space Industries, you'll see em.

I've heard talk about this before. Pretty cool to see a company already committed to it. Way to grab a hold of a untapped market!

There is also Planetary Resources who plans on mining asteroids. DSI's vision seems a bit farther reaching though, but it's not like they'll be competing for resources by any means

Really? That's awesome. I really want to start collecting stocks from these space companies, at least one to frame and put on the wall from each one

Am I the only one that thinks this sounds a lot like Weyland Industries from the movie Prometheus?

I mean, it's really cool if they get it off the ground and have enough funding to make it work, but I would be hesitant to invest too much money in their venture...

(I especially like this part of the site, where you keep scrolling down and "discovering" new planets. They put a crapload of backstory into that movie/website.)

Damn, didn't think of that! And yeah, I don't do investing of any sort really. If I bought stock, it'd be purely for that claim of "yeah I bought a share of DSI when they first started. Worth a couple hundred thousand now!"

And even if it ends up not being worth anything, it'll still be cool to have a little collection of stocks from the first private space companies

Also, what rifle is that in your signature? Just curious, I've been eyeing gas-piston rifles lately...

When you buy stock, can you actually get a paper certificate for that one or two shares? That would be cool to have framed

The rifle in my signature is a Sig-Sauer SIG556 Classic SWAT. Given the current climate, though, you'd be lucky to find one anywhere for less than 2x its normal MSRP of $1,200. (And some people are even trying to sell them for 3 to 4 times their normal MSRP)

Just checked out Deep Space Industries for the heck of it.... They are still private so you can't invest in them yet.

Well, did some Googling and apparently I have no idea how the stock market works (so surprising since I've done 0 investing in it lol). Looks like for the most part you still have to buy a decent amount of shares to get a paper certificate, and even then a lot of stock brokers are shying away from them, they may disappear all together... wish companies would still offer to print one off for you if you bought a share :(
