Not my usual sort of post.

My mom is in her upper 70's, and started doing dialysis about a year ago because of her kidneys failing.

She's been in & out of the hospital now for the last month, with various infections and other issues.

I had planned on taking her to dialysis last Saturday, but got a call from my step dad that she was throwing up on Friday night, and that he would be staying around to do dialysis the next day. So I called on Sunday because she was very tired on Saturday, and let her know I would come up to visit her Monday.

So, I drove up there after work yesterday to visit, and she was not remembering a lot of things, including her two sisters visiting a week earlier while she had been in the hospital. And, she is now back in the hospital today and really has no memory of anything more than 30 minutes ago.

I know many others have dealt with situations like this, but for me it's a first...and I'm having a difficult time with it. I hope she will get some of her cognitive powers back, but there's no way to know...and I worry that I've really had my last real conversation with her.

My mom went through the same thing. She went from having all of her wits about her to having signs of early on set dementia. Have them check her meds, that's what my mom's issues stemmed from. I pray that she gets better.

Dennis, this is great advice. Not all meds are readily dialyzed, she may have some accumulation going on....

I'll say a little prayer for you and your mom....

Steve, we all have you, your mom and your family in our prayers. I somewhat know how you feel, truely I do. Nearly 35 years ago my dad was diagnosed with Parkinsons.....My Dad was a very viberant man.....It was the hardest thing I have ever done in my life, and that was to watch the greatest man I've ever known to slowly wither....over the years he lost his ability of walk....and slowly lost the ability to speak....and finally he lost his eye sight. He was truely trapped in his body.....in the dark. All he had was his hearing......at the age of 90 yrs old, he finally gave up, or at least his body did....We had taken him to the hospital and we were told that his body was shutting down.....He went to sleep that evening, and was snoring his A$$ off the next day when I got there......he was very peaceful......he slept for 2 more days.....and then he was gone.

SO, Do whatever you can to spend as much time as you can whth your Mom.....it may be hard to see, I know, it was for me.....but in your heart, and hers, she will know you and that you are there for her.
