Best myth I've heard...

I recently heard that on warm days, a person MUST leave the car windows cracked when parking the car. Not to vent the warm air out for comfort's sake... but because OTHERWISE the car will blow up... warm (expanding!) air will cause the car to blow up, or at a minimum, blow all of the windows out.

I laughed so hard at that one that I almost wet myself. Well, I actually did, but just a little. One doesn't need to be a rocket scientist to see how illogical that is on 40 different levels and four or five dimensions.

And speaking of myths, while not exactly a spoken proverb of moronic belief, one thing I see in my area makes me laugh a lot (I may need to start wearing Depends). When roads near me are covered in ice and/ or snow, there are those who believe that the best way to drive under those condition is with the accelerator FLOORED, spinning the tires as fast as possible. I even see this done on vehicles wearing snow chains (only takes seconds before a crosslink breaks, and a fender is destroyed in seconds!). There actually IS a time and place when you need to spin the tires (under certain conditions of being stuck, sometimes one can find purchase by spinning the wheels and "burning" / melting a little ice or snow, in order to find the pavement below... but it's fairly unusual for the conditions to be just right for that to work, and even then, should only be done for short bursts, not "just driving around" that way.

Any other "good ones" out there (other than the obvious, but common, misconception that any car is better than a Camaro!!!)?

It's going to take a lot higher temperateness than we experience here on earth in order to create that kind of pressure difference.

Not totally a myth about the windows, my friend!...lol...Ever notice how the windows dip open just before the door closes, then back up?...On a very hot day, the cabin pressure does go up dramatically. It may not "explode", but may be enough to break the seal on the windshield...Had my windshield replaced, was told by installer to keep windows cracked for a few days, especially on hot days, to avoid the windshield popping the seal...

By analogy, would a mother's-in-law head explode if her eyelids were taped shut?

That cell phones and microwaves cause cancer. I've heard those several times over the years.

That's ridiculous...lol...you do realize that the interior of your car is not a pressurized or airtight chamber don't you?

yall know that myth was started with the early VW's that had that "problem", when you slammed the door it could pop a window or hurt your ears, they were rumored so air tight, it would float and not sink.

Not to worry. Most mother-in-law's heads are so full of empty space that there's plenty of room for expanding gases.
