wow $72.00 for cabin filter replacement

So my 19 year old son took his 2009 pontiac G5 to a service department today for an oil change and some warranty work. I'm generally pretty happy with these guys so I figured he was in good hands.

He comes home and says they got me. 72.00 to replace the cabin filter. I said "WHAT?". He showed me the invoice. Yup, $40.00 for the filter and 32.00 for labor. My son can change that dang filter in less than two minutes himself.

Crazy. I'll be calling the service guy today. Hopefully it's a mistake.

Uhm, it's not a mistake. That's how much they can and will charge for that. Do yourself a favor and don't call. You're just wasting your time if you do so, and you're just going to give someone a headache.

seeing as how the service department did the labor....the SHORTEST amount of time for labor is 1/2 HOUR....not to mention, when it comes to how they charge EVERYONE for labor, they have a "BOOK" of every job, so everybody gets charged the same thing for each job.....this is how dealers have been doing business for many years. SO to replace that filter, they look it up.....and that is what you get charged for, regardless of the time it REALLY takes.

Wel... that's just crazy. I get it but still. Highway robbery I tell you. They took advantage of a 19 year old kid. Either that, or I let him down by not warning him to refuse the service. Forgot about that bs when I sent him there. In general they've been pretty good to work with. Still going to call. No reason they can't mark down the air filter and give the kid a break.

They didn't take advantage of anyone. He should have know what service was being done. At least he would have if he paid attention. I know most dealers I have went to and got service done at, had a break down. For example, if you are getting an oil change at X miles, this is what else is standard in the service, and then the prices for each. I guarantee you, you calling will do nothing. There is no reason to give your kid a break, sorry. They won't.

No, they asked him. He just didn't know to ask how much it would cost. That's where I let him down. My bad. I didn't warn him about it. He's new to all of this and there was some warranty work being done so it was all coming at him so fast.

We'll see.

If they won't make any adjustments. well, lesson learned for him. Since I feel I let him down by not warning him about this type of thing, I'll probably split the cost with him.

On the plus side, we can be dang sure he won't make that mistake again.

Why don't you learn to read? Maybe you should back to school. Not once did I diss his son. I told him that it's pointless to call and try and get the price lowered.

Lesson learned. You can clean those cabin filters out by yourself too.

follow up/ in conclusion.
Made the call against the advice here. My sons' next oil change at the dealership will be free.

P.S. - I was not rude or come across angry in any way with the dealership. I understand that book says .5 hours and they make their profit on items like this. I simply asked what they could do about it. The service writer said billing/pricing is out of his control but that he would offer the free oil change. Very accomodating.

Hey way to go, you can't beat that. Hopefully your son learned a double lesson. First to double check on the work being done, and second that if you assert yourself and not just roll-over and accept fate, even dealerships can meet you halfway in a sign of good will.

Such a dealership probably would earn future business from me with such a gesture.
