Any 2.4L Z24 experts?

I recently purchased 2 Z24's. One of them decided to develop a very weird issue.

The car would only start with a shot of starter fluid. No warning lights on at all. Once the cars is running, it runs great. Pulls hard, shifts smooth, no hesitation. Only thing prior to the starting issue was a rough idle.

I have replaced the the fuel filter and the Fuel Pressure regulator. with no change. Although, last night and this morning the car started right up with out it's shot of starter fluid.

anyone?

No, I haven't.... there has to be a reason for this. It doesn't just go away and stay away.... there has to be an underlying issue causing this

Unhappy

my dad had the same issue with his Astro van with the 4300 V6 it would not start without starting fluid, he found out the fuel pump was failing but I never seen them start to fail, just one day they work one day they die.

Definitely fuel pump. I had a Sunfire GT daily driver with the same engine same problem. Better start loading the lines with penetrating fluid especially the return line. The fittings face up, collect water and rot bad. Check the tank too because they rot bad at the filler neck, theres a ledge where the water sits and its a problem area. Do yourself a favor and spray the tank with rust paint while its out to prevent rot unless it's a newer one with a a plastic tank. 2001 and up I believe.

I third the fuel pump. I had a safari van with the same issue. It would start right up with starting fluid, and run perfectly. It did this for several years until the fuel pump finally died. It was a very slow death.

The engine needs a certain level of fuel pressure to start, and even if it's barley below that level, it won't start. But it will run fine once it's fired up.

IDK what it takes to change the fuel pump in a Z/24, but if it's anything like the safari van, plan on spending an afternoon or two dropping the fuel tank, and using lots of profanity dealing with the corroded bolts and fuel lines. Not fun.

Buy new straps too. They'll probly be rotted and break.

Thanks for all the help guys.

I am had never heard or seen a fuel pump "start going bad". I had always seen them work or not so that is what was weird.

Thanks again, I will keep the thread updated once I complete the job.
