Grand National Diesel style (18 to 1)

Hey,
Came across this link today, I love the duramax motor, there are so many vehicles I was to stuff it into. I think the name of this car is 18 to 1,

can anyone think of a better name than that? Like the MaxNational or something. Wish they had some 1/4mi times for this thing.

I know that 65 Impala that Pimp my Ride did beat a lambo in the 1/4

yep, that car started life as a 1981 Diesel Olds Cutlass I believe - truely a nice Hot Rod

i am not that knowledgable about Diesels, shoot, i am not that knowledgable about much

but what does 18 to 1 stand for? Is it compression? are they that much higer in Diesels?

I don't know much about diesels, but I do know that you can make crazy power with them

I can't comment on the name. It might be. but yeah, deisels have a much higher compression ratio than thier gas counterparts. it allows for garanteed compression ignition. They use the "detonation" to their advantage...so to speak. No spark plugs.

I'm no mechanic, I just know what little I've read on them, but I've heard of deisels with a 21:1 CR....crazy..........

Yeah, the basics for a diesel are that there is no spark to set things off. When you compress a gas it heats up. To have a fire you need fuel, oxygen, and heat. So simply by compressing the fuel/air mixture, and therefore heating it, it is possible to cause it to ignite. To help the process along a glowplug is normally used, it glows hot like a lightbulb or heating element on a stove. It's not nearly as hot as the mini lightning bolt that is caused by a sparkplug. At least thats how I think they work
