Engine Builders please help!!!!!! Question....
OK, lets say that you are buying and old muscle car and the car comes with a "new crate motor" that has never been installed or even turned over in approx. 3-4 years.
1) What would you look for as it is out of the car and on a stand? 2) And if you bought that car what would you do to the engine to make sure that you will not have to take it back out of the car? EX: take it to an engine builder to look it over and re lube and re touque it? if so ... cost? Thank you for the information, Bill Baranowski |

The only thing I would be worried about is surface corrosion anywhere that oil hasn't been able to rest like cylinder walls. Is there oil in it? or has it sat dry?
- flip it over and pull the pan off, look at the cylinder walls. If you don't see any surface rust, or can wipe it off easily, bolt it up and go. -if it looks like theres some corrosion going on depending how bad it is you might want to tear it down and investigate further. Maybe take off a main cap and see how the main bearings look (looking for pitting or abrasions). Otherwise pop that baby in the car. Once you get it in the car - unplug the power to the distributor. use the starter to spin the motor for a couple intervals of 10 sec's or so. This will get the oil pump distributing oil to your valvetrain and get the bearings good and lubed up. - Plug in the power to the dizzy and start it up. Get it good and warm, maybe even drive it a few miles. Then do an oil change. That should get any built up gunk outta there. Hopefully that helps a bit! What are ya buyin'?

Haha I thought you were making up some sort of new nickname or something.
If it's not a fully assembled motor give all the mating surfaces a good thorough check/cleaning. Particularly cylinder deck where the heads mate, and bearing surfaces. realistically, if it was oild before storage. In 3-4 years its probably just fine. Unless it was stored in a salt mine haha.

if its a crate motor it should be just fine. a few years in a junk yard wont hurt it. as long as it hasnt gotten rained on, just use it. there should be assembly lube in it.
pre oil it with a drill and turn it over as few times. then start it. if it makes you feel better put a teaspoon of oil in each cylinder and turn it over with the starter.
