The underhood blanket is a safety item.
In the unlikely event of an underhood
fire, the plastic clips will burn,
and the blanket will drop and
help smother the flames.

although it does help as
sound insulation also...

If that info is true, let me tell you it never happens that way. I have fought many a car fires and not once have I ever had the under hood blanket fall and smoother the fire. Every car fire I have ever had, the blanket is still firmly attached to the hood, small fires, big fires, new cars, old cars, high end, low end, it has never worked that way.

It is a sound dampening material, plain and simple. By the time a fire would have gotten big enough to melt all the plastic tabs, the car is gone anyways.

Engine fires draw oxygen from underneath and through the grill. Engine fires are fed by burning fuel and combustibles such as plastics and rubber. Hard to understand how an insulation blanket falling down from under the hood would help smother a fire.

I hate to tell anyone they are wrong, but I can tell you most sales people are misinformed about the hood blanket. It in no way is intended to smother a fire. This is something that was made up long ago and I even used this in my walk around presentations long ago until I finally learned what it is.

The blanket will dampen hood noise, but is intended to protect the paint on the hood from the engine heat. TIS.
