Volt at 31k?

Thought this was an interesting read in the Detroit News. If GM can really drop the price of the Volt by $10,000 I might even consider buying one.

So they want to cheapen the car already to get 10grand out of so they can make more money by selling a lot more. Sounds like the old GM to me.

They wouldn't be making more money, they already lose money on every Volt sold.

They do right now. Understood. They have a lot of cost to regain before they can make money with this car. I know. But, I don't like the sound of taking a new car and redesigning it already to get 10grand out of the price. We don't even know for sure that the current one is all that great in the long term. I would just like a chance to see if the current version has the quality built into it to last. They have a great car there now and I hate to see them cheapen it in the name of more sales. Maybe cheapen it the wrong word here ,but I've seen GM do things like this in the past and it came back to bite them.
I'm sure the people running that Company are much smarter than I ,but I really don't want to see them go down the same road they have in the past.
They are making some great vehicles right now with good overall quality and I hate to see them go back to their old ways of doing business.

I really like this volt. It's the first car of it's kind with some style and function. If I had a need for this type of car, I would gladly pay for it over the other choices.

The 2nd generation Volt is already being worked on. GM knows the current Volt is expensive, so making the next generation more affordable is a priority.

Is the main savings in the batteries? And will they be a better battery even though they cost less?

What came to mind for me when I read this article was the SSR and GTO. Both were supposedly going to be big hits for GM and neither was because the company did everything wrong. Acts like this were habitual of the company over the last 20 years, bring out car out, eff it up, fix it too late. Unless they know something about lowering the cost of lithium ion batteries, I imagine the cost cuts will come from the interior. Either way it doesn't add up to 10k in my eyes.

That's the plan.

Well I can't wait to see how it all plays outs. In a couple of years when I retire I may be in the market for a car like the volt.

Its an interesting concept. I like the volt, I think it is a great car, but not at $41K. I could see that car selling at $31K plus $7500 from Obama, now you've got your self a deal.

If its all true and there aren't any hitches that I'm right there with you. There is always a catch, especially with GM.

At 31k minus the government tax credit (makes it what, 23500?) I would consider it.
