Dodge Viper, More power than advertised ?

Quote:
There's really only one way to get an accurate measure of a car's horsepower, and that's by strapping it on a proper dyno. Even then, not all dyno's produce the same results, but in our numbers-driven society, we'll take what we can get. Two of the fiercest 'Ring competitors are the new Corvette ZR1 and the Dodge Viper ACR, which currently holds the unofficial fastest lap record with a blistering time of 7:22.1. Wondering how they stack up power-wise? According to reports on DragTimes, the duo are pretty darn close with the naturally-aspirated Dodge posting an impressive 546 horsepower and 510 lb-ft of torque compared to the supercharged ZR1's 549.9 horsepower and 500 lb-ft.

Considering that both vehicles use a six-speed stick and power the rear wheels, drivetrain losses should be similar, so these figures are relatively comparable and they prove once again that the horsepower wars are alive and well. For what it's worth, Dodge officially (under) rates the ACR at 600 horsepower, and an estimated 15% loss through the drivetrain would put this beast at an actual 642 horses.

That's pretty neat.

I never cared for V10s or V12s, or V16s, etc though...they always came off as overkill to me.

yah..I can understand that (and respect it)...I love boost, though.

You can make HUGE power for minimal $$$.

ZR1 is still better There's no arguing that's a bad car though. I think the 'Vette has turned into what it is in large part due to the Viper.

If anything the Viper is a better buy... They've got a S/C on it??? It's still a V-8, I mean think about it... No doubt that ZR1 totally rocks... But (umgh) Put a 10k S/C on the Viper and things just got stupid... You know?

You could put the same money and get even better results from the ZR1 it is already supercharged. Besides both cars are now within tenths of a second of each other on the nurburgring so they are even (ps the ACR not the SRT10).

OK I'll jump in the fray here.

And the answer to the "just bolt on a blower to a viper" isn't quite that simple.

The compression ratio is so high in the viper that you might be able to run 4 pounds of boost. for about 10% to 20% gain. So lets say its 20% for a grand total of 750HP approx. A blower for the Viper is gonna run about 10K if we are lucky.

Meanwhile, the ZR1 is already a blown motor that is more than capable of handling near 20lbs of boost. For about, meh, 100 bucks. Now the ZR1 is well into the 800hp range.

That's the problem with NA. It is allready maxed out. Where as the LS9 begs for more boost. GM just doesn't need more. But there is plenty room to grow. Room that you don't have on a NA high CR engine. GM already learned this lesson with the LS7.

FWIW.

I don't think the ACR is really even on the same field as ZR1 though. Isn't that car like stripped and what not? I'm sure GM could find the few more tenths it's lacking in a few more laps and get to at least the same speed as the ACR. Still, I'm not taking away from that car because it's just plain cool.

Shoot; even though Magnusun doesn't make the blower for either the LSA or LS9 I think I still may have some validity: The LSA uses the 1900 blower and Magnusun rates the same size 4-lobe blower to something like 800 horsepower (I haven't read what's claimed for the 2300 in the ZR1). My point is that I think that ZR1 could reliably live in the range gtahvit said. I know the engineers said that the LS9 is at it's limit now but I don't recall exactly as a result of what. It has a completely forged bottom end, bigger head bolts, stronger heads, and a load of other stuff. I'm sure adding long tubes, a different pulley, CAI and catback would get another easy 'hundred horse' out of it. Still, the point about adding FI to the Viper would just be stupid-power, but I don't think a comparison between an NA motor to an FI motor is quite representative.

Either way, it looks like Dodge may have underrated the car a little

I saw a red ACR in Georgia, and it was probably one of the better looking cars I've ever seen
