OT- Potential thief?

Been advertising my old VW Passat on Craigs list. Got an e-mail this AM, wanted to see the car. Said, I'm in Orange Co. (south of LA) taking my sister to the airport in Burbank (n. of LA proper), can I stop by after that. I said sure, gave him my address. He calls about 5:00 pm says I'm just leaving the airport. Calls about 5:30,says should I have gone left or right yada yadA yada. Never showed up. While the wife is making dinner she sees a car drive by the house very slowly and sort of stop in front of our house then leave. Checked his phone area code and it's very north of LA. Am I being setup for a car heist? Not sure I really care as insurance would pay me more than I'm asking but I hate crooks and dealing with insurance cos.

I wouldn't worry about the area code too much. People move but keep the same cell phone number. My wife's still got a Rhode Island number on her phone and she lives in Massachusetts now.

I really hope you are able to sell the car without incident. Best of luck!

Area code portability has been messing with the make up of the area code boundaries a lot lately. I have a 949 (So. OC) area code but I live in So. AZ...

but I second the on keeping your guard up.

A buddy of mine in Glouscester Massachusetts had two Jet Skis on a trailer for sale on the want advertiser. Two gentlemen called him and went to see them. They said that he was asking to much and they left. The next morning, the trailer and the Jet Skis were gone. Do not give out your home address, meet potential buyers some where away from whrere the car is parked. Another trick used with motorcycles is to ask to take the bike for a ride and they leave the car that they came in as security. This car ends up being stolen and they now have your bike. Do not trust strangers.

could be a shady person or it could be someone that just didnt like the car and didnt want to waste their time. i did that once when looking for a truck. we drove 2 hours only to not even stop because the truck wasnt what the picture looked like and there wasnt any reason to talk to them about it as it was a hunk of crap

Never leave anything on a trailer that you want, with out disabling the trailer.

Sad but funny how folks never learn, year after year at car events thieve run off with their trailer full or cars, tools or what not, as all they had to do what hook up and drive off.

You must remove the tires, chain through them and disable starting, so it can't just drive off. Good to use tire covers, so they have no clue that one or more is missing on a trailer till its to late.

This years Hurt Olds event had several rare cars just drive off in the night, as it only took the thieves 30 sec to start them [was caught on camera], you got a car worth near $100,000 and not only does it not have an alarm,
it doens't even have a hidden kill switch.

I have a real hard time sleeping at all and due to awesome PTSD I am extremely hyper vigilant so this really isn't to much an issue for me honestly. However, I do have some good advice I give friends and family about "suspicious activity" I don't care your race, religion, gender, ideology, . . buy a GUN!

tip I learned from my boss, never give out your address. I always just ask to meet at a nearby store or public location.
