 is all I can think of

Full story: http://msn.foxsports.com/motor/story...1410?GT1=39002

Summary: 8 people were killed and 12 people were injured in a desert off road race in California. Spectators threw rocks at the driver, and he had to flee the scene. The injured people were not behind any protective barrier.

What in hell is the matter with all of these people? What did they expect to happen if a driver lost control of his vehicle? Did they expect there to be an invisible wall?

If you ever watch the Baja 500 or whatever it's called..they have folks lined up as spectators like they are "the wall".

unfortunetely this will probably cause the end of open desert racing for spectators. Thats part of the risk when you line up next to the trail right after a jump like that.

Ever watch old rallying videos? People are running out of the way of the cars, part of the nerve you need to have to run it. One or two spectators are killed yearly here or in Mexico during the SCORE races and/or the Baja 500 and 1000, this is the first time its ever been so many, but I'm honestly surprised it hasn't happened many more times.

Anyone who sits that close really is stupid, they have to realize the risk.

I saw a video a while ago of a guy laying in the road at an off-road race where the truck could see him, and flew right over him.

As tragic as this is, the government agency responsible for this land has indicated that the people hosting the event were responsible for safety, not the spirit of desert racing. Regulations required a 50-foot gap between spectators and the track or a 15-mph speed limit. The vehicles were going at full speed with spectators 5 feet from the track. My best guess is that we will see guard rails at these tracks and a hefty fine for the organization.

Guardrails will never happen, its a 50 mile long race course that changes every year. The logistics and cost of putting up that much heavy protection is probably far more than the race could ever bring in. Or even 50 miles of volunteers keeping people back, you'd never get enough it would be impossible.

Incidentally this race was not put on by the 'premier' sanctioning body SCORE which runs races like the Baja 1000, however MDR which did run it has similar rules. For closed course races like this they put up snow fencing 100 feet from the race course and advise spectators not to go past it. Also spectators are required to stay on certain sides of the course in curves and so on.

If you've ever watched a video of a rally or off road race, nobody listens, they crowd the course. In this case they said the snow fence was run over and trampled down. Everyone wants to get close, and so sometimes darwin can strike. You don't walk along the side of the expressway do you? So what made these people think it would be any safer when there a race truck barreling down at 100 mph.

This is just a sad accident... just that, an accident. Hopefully off road racing is not now legalized out of existence, and people will be less stupid when going to a race.

Sucks they are dead, They didn't deserve to die, but seriously if they were close enough to get hit, they were being very reckless and careless with their own safety.

It's true about the people. It was a badge of honor in the old days for people to touch a truck flying by at 100mph. I've always been surprised by how few deaths there are all things considered.
