The rust issue has been covered ad nauseum on this and other forums. The only rust issue that the Mustang has is specific to the untreated metal surfaces on the solid rear axle. The claim that "the thing was so rusted through that it was causing some severe problems underneath" is disingenous and so completely absurd that I can't believe anyone, regardless of their preference in cars, would believe it.

Here's a link to the aforeto mentioned rust issues common with all the S197 Mustang, including the GT500.

As you can see, it is only surface rust. It would take decades, if not hundreds of years for the rust to ever get to the point where it could cause "some severe problems underneath".

As for the rear window, even if such an issue were to occur (which I doubt seriously it did), it would be physically impossible for it to fall into the car. An issue like that would be all over the various GT500-specific forums anyway, and I have not heard a peep from anyone about such an incident.

Grats on the purchase Heh Garage, what you said is absolutely right. I just chalk those stories up as ...well...stories to convince someone why they wanted another car. If the guy wanted a vette he should have waited on one. He probably could not wait for a specific vet he wanted, settle on a GT500, then made up the story on why he LOSS money getting the vette. Lol

Rust to the undercarriage that cause issues...right....hell my 65 does not have that rust....and that was before I restored it...BTW I live in S. FLA too....

Well if you didn't hear about it must not be true

Holy Crapola, get over yourself. It happened, and I personally know the guy it happened to. I don't know the extent of his underside damage, nor did I see the window, but this guy builds race cars in his free time... He knows his way around.

Well it was a Z06, and apparently (not everyone loves to talk about financial transactions) he got a killer deal.

Ps. GL, I'm sorry I thread jacked your really popular GT500 thread

coolman. I hate you! j/k

That is a nice looking GT500. Big congrats! I like it and now I want one! I test drove one 2-3 weeks ago and liked it still (test drove one back in May too - leftover 08 model I think it was though). I have been trying not to think about it ever since.

I understand that crazy things can happen to any make/model, but the idea that a window (I'm still not clear if it was one of the port windows or the rear glass in this case) just fell out and into the back seat of a car is waaayyy out there. I've done a few restorations in my day and in the process had to remove a lot of factory glass. It is not an easy thing to do when you are trying to get it out, let alone something that could just work itself loose and fall out. It is also something that could not be missed by QC before the car ever rolled out of the factory. That's why I think in this particular case, perhaps the guy was making it up just to justify getting rid of the car for something he felt was better.

That and the comments regarding the "dangerous" rust on a brand new car makes me think that he tends to exaggerate for effect. I know you are only repeating what you were told, so I'm not calling you a liar by any means.

Optional equipment....

$2,340 = Electronics Package

Basically a $3k MSRP jump over the 2010 one. Now the GT500 starts at $50k instead of $46k.

These cars are getting really expensive.

Tell your buddy to watch those sodium filled exhaust valves on that Z. Thats the latest buzz on the vette forum.

The GT500, when he bought it a few months before, was like 54k.... which is ridiculous for a Mustang.

He paid $54K for a GT500? I thought you said he knew his way around! Maybe he should stick to building racecars versus buying new cars.

I had my dealer spec out a 2011 GT500 just like my 2010 to see how much it would run.

Retail Invoice
Shelby Coupe Base Price
$48645.00 $43999.00
Electronics Package
$2340.00 $2036.00
Fuel Charge
NA $43.68
FDAF Assessment
NA $450.00
Destination and Delivery
$850.00 $850.00
Total
51835.00 $47378.68

At this point there is no Gas Guzzler tax like on my 2010 order.

The Sticker on my 2010 which also had the cover (HID now included) was $51,270.00
