The Pre is a solid device, as is the Tour, but it really depends how you're going to use the phone. If you want a more entertainment-centric experience, go with the Pre. If you want a more businessy device, go with the Tour. Lastly, the person with the Treo 800w, the problems with that device are more than likely problems with Windows Mobile, not the device itself. Palm's WebOS is MUCH more stable than WinMo. Lastly, Verizon will likely get the Pre around Christmas, and Sprint will probably be getting the Pixi, which is a lower-end version of the Pre around the same time.

I'm considering getting the Tour now as just a year long placeholder to wait for the touchpro3 (rumored to be out next fall) which'll run wimo7 which is supposed to be based on windows7 which is amazing. My two biggest gripes about the Pre are it feel very flimsy, and no expandable memory. The OS is quite possibly the best of any phone I've ever used. If there was any news of palm coming out with a pre2 that addressed those issues I'd wait up to 3/4 months and just send in my Instinct to get fixed. Quote:

On another note, I got a call from a Palm Pre tech yesterday. This guy called, informed me he was NOT with Sprint. But, he was with Palm and was calling in regards to my previous Pre and the problems I had with it. I explained the whole locking of the screen issue, etc. He then asked how Palm could make the Pre a better product. Dude...here's where I was waiting to give info. First, flash player and adobe. Can't watch videos straight off the web. I told them to get on the ball with software on this issue and they'd blow everyone else out of the water. Last I heard, the Iphone does not have that video type capability. I told them about the apps...and how the Iphone KILLS the pre in that catagory. I told them about software for ring tones. Right now, if you want certain ring tones, you have to download an mp3 cutter and make your own and then drag n' drop them. Bit of a pain compared to my old ring tone deal. I told them about a few things...as I've had it for a while now. But, again, love the phone. GREAT phone and how it build quality sucky? I'm sorry...but I have NO clue as to what you are talking about. This thing is ....a perfect slide out, solid phone.

They work great but you do want to take extra care with them. My cousin had two and they broke on him pretty easy. The first one he had dropped about three feet and hit the floor and the screen went out (did the whole white thing were it would only show white). The second one he had would just freeze up on him all the time. But other those two things the phone was awesome and worked great.

In case any of you don't know, there are over 200 apps available made by regular people that aren't yet in Palm official app store.
Check www.precentral.net for more info, or just PM if you need any help.

The Hero is a pretty solid device, based on the reviews of the MyTouch 3G (VERY, VERY similar devices)

I went with the Tour. Couldn't get over the flimsy feeling of the Pre and when I finally got to play with the Touch Pro2 winmo turned me off of it.

Solid device. You might also want to look into TetherBerry, if you use it sparingly. It'll let you use your phone's internet connection for a computer. It's really nice when your internet dies and you need to find something, or when you're somewhere without an internet connection.
