For me it still referees to Japanese imports ... Guess I'm still old school.
That may have been what it was called back then, but now a days its not. A civic with a huge wing and loud exhaust is rice, not a stock civic.

anything done tastefully i would not consider rice. take similar mods to your car PQ and put them on any import, not rice. the disgustang with the rear spoiler on the hood isnt rice either...IT RETARDED! (and not all mustangs are disgustangs...but that one is )

Maybe back then, but not today. When I see a guy in a stock corolla, I do not say look at that ricer. Now if it has a bunch of Autozone parts on it then it is rice. For example, a Scion TC with 500 hp and a bodykit and wing and some stickers on it is not rice, IMO. Some disagree though.

Hmmmmm.......

I guess to me the article summed it up best so far.

If it has legit performance then I guess maybe not rice.

I always thought the weedwhacker sound was rice wether the car was legit or not. lol

Yes and no. If the mods support the performance of the car, its not rice. Say you (for whatever bizarre reason) have a Nissan Sentra that is twin turbo'd making 400 hp. You get a body kit to fit wider tires with thinner sidewalls to give the car more grip in the corners. You install a rear spoiler to improve the cars balance. The various holes and ducts help to keep everything cool. Its covered in stickers because those are the folks that sponsored your build.

Visually, many would consider it to be rice but since all those mods actually serve a purpose I don't think it qualifies as rice anymore. That is of course assuming that its not all carboard and duct tape, and the 'turbo chargers' are more than just hair dryers painted silver.

tis a fine line ...

If you go back in time when Asian cars first started getting popular in the us, before trash can mufflers and 4ft whale tails, the term was used for any car the came from Japan. I can remember clear back to the early 80's my friend had a Datsun that had a Front Plate that said "unleaded rice only". The point is that the meaning sort of change from what it was intended to mean in the beginning. Now it seems to be any car that has some silly mod that has no real performance gain but gives the impression of a performance gain.

As far as me, I'm old car and any Asian made car is a ricer no matter what performance it has. We used to always call sport bikes rice rockets ,but the term would also work for a car like a GTR

Also, I think everyone forgets that there was a time when foreign cars where really looked down on in the USA ,and many people didn't welcome them with open arms because we used to have more pride in our country than we do today.

To me this is how I always viewed it.

Any car with excessive, exterior, AFTERMARKET modifications that does not increase the performance capabilities themselves nor enhance any performance modifications made to the vehicle.

Well if thats the case, I am a ricer too. I have a splitter, spoiler and vinyl on my car with limited performance parts!

If the car is already pretty quick stock, I do not consider a few tasteful body mods rice.
