wow, this news really suprised me. It looked like the Corvette would languish with the current money problems. Good news that they are staying ahead of the game. I have to believe the production car will be a toned down version of the Stingray concept. I think the front end is a little too much.
As to using new materials to bring down weight: i think they could really just trim the length of the car to save some weight. Look how big of a trunk the Corvette has. It could lose a little of that and save a few inches, and pounds.

I'm really optimistic about the C7. The C6 already gets more than respectable fuel economy for a V8 sports car, so I don't think we'll have to compromise all that much. When you start with light weight and good aerodynamics, you make life easy on yourself.

Right now, I'm imagining my ideal C7 as a cross between the Stingray Concept and the Alfa 8C. A little more rounded, a little less wide, and the back end from the original Stingray (and I'm still a complete sucker for the split rear window, but that should remain on my fantasy 1963 Corvette) would make for a pretty hot car, in my opinion.

Following suit in some of GM's most recent masterpieces (CTS-V, ZR1), Id say the new generation of performance cars will be something special. Hopefully the fact that fuel economy and government influence is now a real life problem we wont see the Corvette suffer because of it. I'd hate for this thing to come out and everyone start thinking the C6 vette was ''the last good year''

imo, I tend to think of the C6 as one of the first cars built by a recently(at the time) "unchained" GM design and engineering team. It's good. But not as great as it could be...again, imo.

I fully expect the C7 to blow the socks off of every admirer of the C6 and burn the eyebrows off of every critic!!

Here is another Article: Talks about the Camaro team working on the new C7... and gives some 'speculative' information regarding upcoming specs.

Retractable headlights will never appear on a Corvette ever again.

I hope, for the sake of the Corvette not me personally, that they put a respectable interior in there for the C7. It doesn't have to be great, but better than they've had recently. Why? So that there is 1 less thing to complain about with Corvettes. Once you have performance, fuel economy, styling, and interior down ... there isn't much room left for complaint.

I'm glad mid-engine layout is out. The front-engine, rear transaxle layout certainly hasn't made the Corvette's performance second rate. The cost/benefit ratio for that move just doesn't make sense.

The DCT, while meaningless to people wanting a true manual, would probably be a draw for a lot of people. They see them popping up in more and more performance cars, and eventually it will come to be expected. On the plus side, they could win over a lot of people disaffected by the near-extinction of manual transmissions in other performance cars. It will be interesting to see how this works out for sales.

And as far as the engine, I'd still much rather see a high-tech, DI, perhaps turbocharged V8 than a high-tech, DI, turbocharged V6. I fully understand that 6 cylinders are perfectly fine in a sports car application, especially one as light as the Corvette, but the Corvette is iconic and much of that has to do with the V8. You just don't change the recipe on these kinds of things.

Bottom line, an even lighter C7, with similar power and perhaps one of the last manual transmissions would make consider ditching the plan to buy a used Camaro or C6 as my weekend car.

Scroll down ~ halfway through the article for a glimpse into what the C7 might have in store for an interior.

I'm still unsure how I feel about the prospect of a base Corvette with a TT V6. I think I have to sit on that for a few more days before I have an opinion one way or the other... It certainly isn't bad...
