The real damage usually comes ahead of hurricanes. The storm surge is caused by the storm pushing in to land. I'm stating the obvious here but the rain starts long before the storm "makes landfall". There is obviously damage from the winds of the hurricane, but the real issues come from the flooding and tornadoes that spin off of it, usually coming from the northeast side of the storm.

Stay safe folks...any storm like this is a big deal. In the south, we don't panic because we are always prepared for this type of thing. I've been prepared since the last one came through.

Here in the Baltimore Washington corridor, the biggest threat is falling trees. Its been raining pretty steady for about 24 hours so the ground is saturated. When the highest wind gusts hit later tonight, (after several more hours of HEAVY rain), then we will have a real mess on our hands.

ok guess this has gone too far - my apologies for getting carried away here. I'm venting - my issue isn't with you personally, it's the local news and weather forecasters who create mass hysteria - causing all the local idiots to clean out all the local Lowe's, supermarkets and gas stations in a panic. There is definitely a calm, rational way to prepare for a storm (based on realistic impact) but the media is much more concerned with crazed headlines and ratings.

Yeah, 2010 SSRS is up in RI and he said he's watching huge trees fall in the forest behind his house and wires and power poles are down everywhere.

I agree there's a lot of overhype and mass-hysteria that goes on, and I don't want to perpetuate that at all. I just think people need to take this seriously.

No question about that.

Every time a hurricane or anything close comes through, there is a news correspondent in full rain gear on the beach warning everyone to stay inside and "hunker down". Then you see a couple walking behind him holding hands or someone walking their dog.

It's funny as hell....
