Studies have proven driving while distracted is equally as dangerous as driving under the influence.

Equally.

Nobody wants to take it as seriously because it means they are now morally responsible for their actions behind the wheel while texting, taking calls, fishing around for CDs or whatever else people do while driving that they are sure they can do without causing harm to others.

As for going 130. No excuse for that on the street.

For those who don't know:20 percent of injury crashes in 2009 involved reports of distracted driving. (NHTSA).
  • Of those killed in distracted-driving-related crashed, 995 involved reports of a cell phone as a distraction (18% of fatalities in distraction-related crashes). (NHTSA)
  • In 2009, 5,474 people were killed in U.S. roadways and an estimated additional 448,000 were injured in motor vehicle crashes that were reported to have involved distracted driving. (FARS and GES)
  • The age group with the greatest proportion of distracted drivers was the under-20 age group – 16 percent of all drivers younger than 20 involved in fatal crashes were reported to have been distracted while driving. (NHTSA)
  • Drivers who use hand-held devices are four times as likely to get into crashes serious enough to injure themselves. (Source: Insurance Institute for Highway Safety)
  • Using a cell phone use while driving, whether it’s hand-held or hands-free, delays a driver's reactions as much as having a blood alcohol concentration at the legal limit of .08 percent. (Source: University of Utah)
So blow it off if you want to. But you're going against reality.

AND, those numbers are from 2009. Would you say there are more, or fewer, drivers now using mobile devices and such?

Maybe Dunn was attempting to tweet another picture of himself as he careened off the roadway at 130 mph.

When did this go from 110 to 130 MPH? Is that was the crash investigation showed?

They are now saying 130+.

Here's a vid of the scene... give you an idea of what he might have been trying to do... which is totally insane at that speed.

Damn! Yeah that would explain the small chunks of metal they picked out. That's freaking ugly looking.

Other than changing the radio station, I don't do any of those things....and some of those things aren't nearly as bad as drunk driving. Changing a radio station or grabbing a french fry or sipping your coffee is in no way shape or form as bad as drunk driving regarding how much it impairs your ability to drive.

Drunk driving is not simply a "mistake" an intelligent person makes. It's criminally stupid. Period, full stop. Ryan Dunn didn't just have 2 beers and drive, barely firting with the legal limit....he was hammered...he showed poor judgement throughout the entire process...from when he decided to have FAR too many drinks that night to when he decided to get behind the wheel. He's a (dead) idiot and I have no sympathy for him.

What he did can in no way be compared to changing the radio station while driving or sipping your coffee. Using your cell phone in any capacity while driving is also stupid, however, and should be banned in places where it hasn't already been.

Lots of great statistics. Although, these numbers don't mean anything when you are just showing your "side" of the story. You should put both statistics up, if you really want to "win" your case. You should also provide links to where you're getting these numbers.

For instance, in a previous post you say that both driving while distracted is exactly the same as driving under the influence. But with the information i'm reading from my sources, and your numbers, driving under the influences is much worse. here is what i got:

Quote:
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) 33,808 people died in traffic crashes in 2009 in the United States (latest figures available), including an estimated 10,839 people who died in alcohol-impaired driving crashes. Drunk driving fatalities accounted for 32% of all traffic deaths last year, that is, on average someone is killed in an alcohol-impaired driving crash about every 50 minutes in the U.S. (Source: NHTSA/FARS, 2010)
http://www.centurycouncil.org/learn-...iving-research
So that's almost double the 18% you showed for distracted drivers.

and to your last bullet, .08 is the legal limit, so i'm not sure if that bullet helped your stance on the subject. lol
