So yeah, went out and got it yesterday...freaking awesome! But I hate that games have achievements, I feel the need to make sure I don't miss any...I guess it's not that I hate it so much as it gives me the itch to replay maps. Graphics awesome, UI awesome...pretty much an all round sweet game, well worth the wait.

I smell a conspiracy! Game makers giving you a reason to play their games again?

I completely agree with you though, I've gone back to get achievements plenty of times now. More so after I learned the avatars are unlocked from achievements.

I just don't see how people can get hooked on video games. I mean, I have a PS3 and a Wii....haven't turned either one on in months.

First, I got the game yesterday. I liked the original Starcraft, but my favorite game of this genre was Total Annihilation.

RTS games like this are fun for a while, but not my favorite type. I'm more of a fan of turn based strategy like Civilization.

Unfortunately, turn based games aren't "sexy" to publishers even though they are superior games. Most of the best games for computers have been turn based, in my opinion.

Oh man, I am the direct opposite...I can't stand turn based, I enjoy the "real time" playing...allows for many more mistakes, and lets me appreiciate the developed skill in said games. But to each his own, and I am not hating on turn based, just avoid them like the plague.

I'm not hooked, I can quit anytime I want!!!

But seriously, for me video games are a little escape from reality, they are an output of someone's imagination which I find fascinating. You can do things in video games that we may never be able to do in reality, experience things you never would have thought of. Now, that being said I tend to game only during the work week. On weekend's my girlfriend and I try to get out of the house as much as possible. Hiking, canoeing, boating and tubing with my co-worker, etc.

Anyway, you know what I don't get? People that follow sports religiously. Whats the point?

I will definitely give much respect to Civilization, excellent games all around. I also love Starcraft, not only for the level of fun, but also the story line.

Here's the thing about why I'm less inclined to play RTS over Turn based.

RTS games become about who is most familiar with the interface, and can navigate the games interface the best. In turn based games, you can strategize more, in my opinion. Most turn based games have richer gameplay (better tech trees, more options) than RTS games which are usually pretty simplistic.

MOO2 is still one of the best games ever created. Civilization is another. Most of the D&D games and games like Dragon Age let you pause the game to give detailed orders to each of your characters.

RTS has become the cash cow of the gaming industry because they are dumbed down for more casual game players. Games like Starcraft 2 are good and fun, don't get me wrong. But because of this, there is less development into "fringe" games, some of which were very successful in the past. You rarely see simulations anymore, such as Falcon 3.0 and many of the other great Jet Fighter sims. Sub simulations suck these days as well. There were games like Wing Commander and Privateer that are no longer being made because "RTS is where the money is at". Only well established game designers like Sid Meier and Wil Wright do more off the wall stuff. Spore wasn't even that great, but fun. The Sims is unique and a fun game as well. Name something else in the PC world that is unique though...it's really rare these days.

Gone are the days of the Apple ][ when small outfits could put out a game and it was amazing. Red Storm Rising, Ultima, Wizardry, Karateka, F-19 Stealth Fighter....games like these are no longer made.

I guess I am just enjoy faster paced games, even with dragon age I don't pause to issue commands, I just do everything on the fly. One of the things I hated about Mass Effect was not having all my abilities at my fingers and would have to "pause" the game to change or switch to another power or weapon that wasn't in the quick switch(Xbox360). While I occasinally play turn based, I find my self drawn to "Real Time" games.

/sigh yeah one of my major is complaints is a complete lack of a true flight simulation /space flight simulation game these days. My favorite: X-wing vs TIE Fighter and the later X-wing alliance. Those games were great! I can't imagine how awesome a modernized version would be! but not even a whisper of this from lucas arts :(
And yes, you're correct, there is a LOT more actual strategy in games like Civilization. The name of the game in Stracraft is who can build up the fastest and overwhelm your opponent with numbers. that part of the game is going to lose appeal with me quickly if they don't fix it somehow.

That's one reason that Total Annihilation (TA) is my favorite RTS of all time. Supreme Commander (SC) was the more recent version of that.

What made TA and SC good was that you pretty much started with your most powerful unit. You can't Zerg Rush or overwhelm your opponent early in the game because the starting unit was powerful. It could build, but it could also stop pretty much any minor early attacks. This gave you a chance to build up defenses a little and made it so that you could build up your tech trees a little bit before truly getting attacked in any way that could kill you.
