Between my son and I we have burned through 6 consoles since the introduction of the 360. The Elite I bought right after Xmas in 2008 didn't last a year, Jasper chip in it, but this time it was the video board.... I think... E74 error message. I now have a bone yard of Xbox consoles, all have been repaired under warranty so at least we always have a back up.

Anywho, the $50 per year for the Xbox live service seems worth it to me, as I take full advantage of all it's abilities on a regular basis. I can see where someone who only plays online once in a great while wouldn't want to bother with it though.
Yeah PSN doesn't do that AFAIK... I could be wrong though. You can do chats if you're all in the same game but I don't think you can do between 2 games. I honestly don't even use my headset, I can't stand listening to some of these morons spewing racial slurs and other garbage, screaming like idiots, and otherwise acting like complete human trash.

I would definitely pay $50 a year for PSN even without those features. While it comes down to the game's way of setting up competition the games that I have all have good setups and the PSN is integrated nicely into everything. I just like to pretymuch play anonymously with no headset, It is fun, but not the same as when I played online games on the PC 15 years ago where you could actually meet people who didn't act like children with brain damage.

Gotta love Xbox Live "friends only" option. Don't have to listen to any of that crap and agree with both your comments 100%. If you're not the N word, then you're the F word and all this from kids who haven't stopped wetting the bed yet. Don't you just love the Xbox parenting generation!

Yeah, it IS pretty bad sometimes. But thank God for that mute button!! Without it I'm pretty sure playing online would get old real quick. And yeah, whenever I get around to having kids, if I ever caught them talking like that to anyone they'd be getting their game system confiscated reeeeeaaal quick.

I've read that if you have repeated failures you should get a UPS that will smooth the electricity from dips and such. Not just a surge protector a better unit with line conditioning.

I have a Furman power conditioner/surge protector and it didn't save my previous units from failure.

NO. KIDDING.

The first thing I do when I play online is mute all of the other players. The Halo 3 lobby is full of ten-year-olds who lust learned how to curse. It gets old fast.

They should just make different consoles based on your use, Xbox 360 Light Version - 5hrs/week or less
Xbox 360 Intermediate Version - 15 -20hrs/week
Xbox 360 Get a Life Version - More than 40 hrs/week

Unfortunately there have been times (games) where I would need the last version

On the earlier version of the 360 the issue had nothing to do with the quality of power or consistency, over heating was the issue. The repeated heating and cooling of the boards over time caused the boards to warp eventually leading to solders separating from the boards and the RED RING OF DEATH. Better fans and the cooler running Jasper Chips have pretty much eliminated that problem.

Ohh its like a train wreck, although I noticed some games are worse than others. I play Uncharted 2 and its insane, but HAWX (an air combat sim) generally has normal people in it. I had SOCOM on PS2 with the network adaptor and I used to laugh about the kids on there that were acting like they were real SEALS, but I'd WAY rather have that than the mess it has become.

I did read an article though that XBL and PSN were starting to put more controls in place to suspend and even ban people who speak like that.
