or here's another idea...... do like the old VW's did..... push the stick straight down and back into 2nd..... then you got reverse..... never accidentally hit R again

7 gears, and still 2000RPM@55 in 7th?

That's kinda how the new Mustangs do it, actually. Reverse is on the left and up, like first, except you have to push the shifter straight down in neutral before going left and up. There's really no way to accidentally hit it.

With that many speeds in a manual I wonder if it would be better to have a ratcheting sequential? gear indicator on the dash, slap it forward to downshift, pull back for upshift, still use clutch. Like a rally car.
That'd be cool.

love. my. car.

I just moved up from a 5 speed to a 6 speed. Now I'm gonna have to feel all inadequate all over again because I don't have a 7th gear? oh man!
But seriously, why not, I typically shift 1-3-5-6 during normal driving anyway. Sure the shift pattern is a little weird, but I got used to it, You don't need to use ALL the gears if your car has enough torque... I mean first gear can do up to what? 50MPH? So technically, I could just do a 1-6 shift pattern and be done with it.

ya can basically eliminate first, and "pull a dead horse" in second from a dead stop ALL the time!..i do!..first is too tall anyway, and only useful for getting underway...just sayin' |

When you are at speed reverse is locked out, when you are at a stop going to reverse while trying to go to first is more probable. I guess I am the only one that would love a 7 speed. Every once in a while when I'm cruising at above 85 mph in sixth I try to shift up to the next gear, also a really short first gear would be awesome for getting out of the hole at the track. A 7 speed could solve both these problems.

I think a 7-speed would be great. More options means being in the right gear more often. Hopefully they're choose ratio's that help performance and economy, win win.
