they always put reverse on the wrong side..... great for backing up when you want to go forward

Or more annoying. They might make it a 1 to 5 skip if 5th in the 7-speed is the same or close to the same ratio as 4th in the 6-speed

That's kinda how the new Mustangs do it, actually. Reverse is on the left and up, like first, except you have to push the shifter straight down in neutral before going left and up. There's really no way to accidentally hit it.

Im looking for the article I read but I am pretty sure it is supposed to be only for low torque vehicles.....

I still cant find anything that says the corvette is getting a 8 speed.

With that many speeds in a manual I wonder if it would be better to have a ratcheting sequential? gear indicator on the dash, slap it forward to downshift, pull back for upshift, still use clutch. Like a rally car.

That'd be cool.

I just moved up from a 5 speed to a 6 speed. Now I'm gonna have to feel all inadequate all over again because I don't have a 7th gear? oh man!

But seriously, why not, I typically shift 1-3-5-6 during normal driving anyway. Sure the shift pattern is a little weird, but I got used to it, You don't need to use ALL the gears if your car has enough torque... I mean first gear can do up to what? 50MPH? So technically, I could just do a 1-6 shift pattern and be done with it.

A big part of why they chose 1-4 was because that zig-zag pattern is more natural than going in the c-shape of 1-3 or 2-4. So I don't see them going to a c-pattern of 1-5.

another thing is,ya got so much "damn grunt" throughout the band,
ya can basically eliminate first, and "pull a dead horse" in second from a dead stop ALL the time!..i do!..first is too tall anyway, and only useful for getting
underway...just sayin'

I guess I am the only one that would love a 7 speed. Every once in a while when I'm cruising at above 85 mph in sixth I try to shift up to the next gear, also a really short first gear would be awesome for getting out of the hole at the track. A 7 speed could solve both these problems.

I think a 7-speed would be great. More options means being in the right gear more often. Hopefully they're choose ratio's that help performance and economy, win win.
