Hopefully, GM can work out something to replace the small cool cars.

first off ive never understood why you would want to kill off brands... to me it makes sense to rebadge a good car in a different package. think of it this way, you decide you want a midsized car. then you decide that you like a saturn, an chevy, a honda, a toyota, and ford. these cars offer about the same size, the same options, the same price, the same warranty. so now what are you shopping for? looks. that means that there is a 40% chance the buyer will pick up a gm product, whereas if they killed off saturn there would only be a 25% chance without it there. maybe its just the way i shop for stuff but i set a standard for everything i want (usually a high standard) and filter out everything else. then pick from what is left standing.
Now think of it from a business aspect. you give toyota all the advertisement money in the world. most of the cost of a vehicle is in its development. so you use toyota to recover the development costs plus make a bit of dough, but have reached the roof of buyers. that is, everybody who wants one has one. then how are you going to reach more buyers? by giving a slightly altered product. people may not want the toyota because its bland and everybody and their mother now has this car. so to keep them from going somewhere else you rebadge it as a toyata, make it look different, and ta da. it doesnt sell like hotcakes but it doesnt have to because all the development costs are already taken care of. just plan for the low volume, dont let 'side' market outgrow the demand and its all good. the only extra cost is some different pannels and paying the designer. is there something im missing beyond this that makes extra brands cumbersome? i agree that having a g6/malibu/aura is overkill to this idea, but a malibu aura shouldnt be to bad. ps. i think there was some talk about a alternative to the kappa platform for the solistice/sky duo. much more cost effective. who knows though. pontiac needs a rally car, a rwd midsized sedan and coupe, a roadster, and a large powerful sedan and coupe. throw it in every racing division out there it can. let that be its marketing platform. nothing defines performance like competition. |
