It might sell cars but they lose money when they have to put all those incentives out there to move the vehicles. That is what has gotten them to this point. When you have many more cars available than people will buy you have to take a loss to move the cars.

I agree with you 100%! I could have got one great deal on a Vette when GM had the employee pricing going on. The problem was that as nice as the Vette would have been it would still run more for the entry level Vette than my 2010 SS2/RS with options. The difference would have been around $5000. I don't think offering additional incentives on GM cars will do anything because it has not to this point. I would like to see the government offer the big 3 a low interest loan with provisions that they restructure to bring them back into the black.

On most of the cars they are not taking a loss.. just the ones they have an oversupply of that do not sell well, I would even venture to say that they have not ever sold a vette for a loss...

My 2008 Saturn Sky MSRP was $28,060 if I option out and exact same 2009 Sky it's MSRP is $30,080, even with the red tag event and the Customer cash incentive it brings it down to $28,336. Still more than the MSRP on the 2008...

This is what people need t understand, the red tag even going on now is not as big a savings as it needs to be as it is just a marketing tool to make you think you are getting a savings when in reality you are paying exactly what they want you to pay.. They'll even get you on the trade in as well..

I agree that rules need to be put in place where dealers cannot go over MSRP set in place by the company. If they want to compete, they have to advertise as lower than MSRP and these Red Tag events actually mean something...

The auto industry in the US is no longer a growth market. Like VW saying they are going to sell 1,000,000 cars a year in 10 years. They are smoking crack. That will only happen by stealing market share. Suppose you did find a formula to sell a bunch of cars right now. You are only going to sell 'so many'. There are only so many drivers out there. So after you have practically "given away" a ton of cars in 2009, what happens in 2010? Who's buying in 2011? The way they are going to survive is not to sell more, its by fixing the root cause==reducing cost. The UAW and the rest of the US auto industry is going to have to adapt or die.

And why would we do any favors to foreign automakers when almost all of the money they make leaves the US?

I wonder what the odds are on the banks paying back any of the 700bln they are getting versus the automakers paying back their potential loans? At least the automakers have a business plan and a product to sell, the banks just want money to cover their screwups and to force the government to buy debt that has no chance of being repaid.
I don't believe the banks are required to pay the money back.
