It might sell cars but they lose money when they have to put all those incentives out there to move the vehicles. That is what has gotten them to this point. When you have many more cars available than people will buy you have to take a loss to move the cars.

On most of the cars they are not taking a loss.. just the ones they have an oversupply of that do not sell well, I would even venture to say that they have not ever sold a vette for a loss...
My 2008 Saturn Sky MSRP was $28,060 if I option out and exact same 2009 Sky it's MSRP is $30,080, even with the red tag event and the Customer cash incentive it brings it down to $28,336. Still more than the MSRP on the 2008...

I agree that rules need to be put in place where dealers cannot go over MSRP set in place by the company. If they want to compete, they have to advertise as lower than MSRP and these Red Tag events actually mean something...

The auto industry in the US is no longer a growth market. Like VW saying they are going to sell 1,000,000 cars a year in 10 years. They are smoking crack. That will only happen by stealing market share. Suppose you did find a formula to sell a bunch of cars right now. You are only going to sell 'so many'. There are only so many drivers out there. So after you have practically "given away" a ton of cars in 2009, what happens in 2010? Who's buying in 2011? The way they are going to survive is not to sell more, its by fixing the root cause==reducing cost. The UAW and the rest of the US auto industry is going to have to adapt or die. |
