He's been babied! I carry him up the steps. I gave him a ride in the camaro tonite when I went out to go work out at the gym. I'm hoping to find out some answers tomorrow morning. My dog is sooo hyper he watches bull riding on tv runs circles in the yard jumps up and down. The poor thing is in pain and has no energy left.

I knew an owner like you. Her dog was bitten by a raccoon. She decided to be cheap and bandage up the wound herself. Two weeks later, she calls us and says her dog is sick. Turns out the wound had become infected and the tissue surrounding it had necrotized, you could see dead tissue and bone in it. The infection had spread through the dog's body and it was immediately euthanized. You could smell rotting flesh in the clinic for hours after the dog had been euthanized. This owner wanted to save a few bucks but ended up paying hundreds of dollars for euthanasia and disposal of her dog.

To the OP, take the dog to the vet as soon as possible. Waiting will only make the injury worse. We can do X-rays in less than five minutes on a slow day. If it isn't too serious, like a sprain or something, some pain meds such as Rimadyl and rest will do. If it actually is fractured, he'll probably need a cast or splint of some sort. Could take a few weeks to heal depending on the severity.

Again, do NOT follow Big Brunsy's "advice." Get the dog to the vet.
infection is easy to prevent, just give a shot of penecillin

as for when they obviously aren't gonna make it...
bullet = $.058
euthanized by vet = $200 +/-

I would have taken him to the vet the same day. if you wait to long and the leg is broken that can cause more problems.
it's just a dog, and I've had several. Bought a St. Benard and the 4th day I had it the stupid thing ran under my car while I was leaving the driveway....it never went to the vet and turned out just fine for the most part. Lived a healthy couple years until it went off and never came back one day.

If I was ur dog I would take off as soon as I had a chance too...

I bought pet insurence for my Doberman the first day I got him and it has saved me close to $2500 in 2 years. And I only pay about $30 a month. Take care of ur pets, ur all they've got.

I've got to admit, when I started reading this thread I had no faith that the animal lovers would come through! I am an emergency technician and partial owner of an emergency clinic and have a lot of experience with animals.

Big Brunsy - Possibly the worst advice I have ever heard...all of it! The "it's just an animal" attitude is why there are so many strays and animals that are in the shape that they are in. I'm sure you don't have the attitude that "it's just a car" when it comes to that sweet ride in your drive way, and that thing isn't even a living thing. If you had a flat tire on it would you just blow it up and call it a day? 1. Euthanasia should not be that expensive anywhere! 2. Penicillin does not prevent all types of infection, especially those caused by bite wound from a wild animal, you will need a much stronger, spectrum specific antibiotic. But, when it comes to your animals do as you wish, i'd just refrain from advice to others.

Ibuprofen can cause ulcers but it's because it is renal toxic. It will send your animal into renal failure which then causes the ulcers in the mouth. I don't recommend ANY OTC meds for humans. The only one I ever recommend is bennadryl for allergies and for short term use unless rx by your rDVM.

Pet insurance is a great idea. There are some out there that will cover emergencies but not routine things like vaccinations. There are also some that will cover a certain percentage of each. Do your research on what you are looking for. Also, some insurance wont cover conditions that animals are predisposed to.

Stacy- I agree with some advice above, get your cat to a veterinarian as soon as you can (which seems to be what you are doing). They will need to take rads (expect them to take at least two) and depending on how painful your baby is they may need to get some pain meds on board but hopefully will not have to sedate (which if he is as painful as you say they may need to). Keep him as confined as possible, only letting him out to use the bathroom. Good luck with everything and keep us all updated, and thank you. From someone who sees how crappy some people treat their animals on a daily basis, it's always good to see people who truly appreciate the joy that animals bring to our lives.

If you need anything give me a shout. Like I said, I am no veterinarian, but I've been in this field for a while and have seen just about everything.

That there is HillBilly advise. (No offense to other Hill Billies). Damn, man it is 2010. I know out there in the country things are different, and they may "JUST BE DOGS" to you, but not to others. I would take my dogs over most humans.

To run over an animal and not take it to the vet is considered animal cruelty in many states, as it should be. If you can't afford it don't have it. Just like kids. People that are that careless about animals, usually are not the most caring toward people either. 9 out of 10 Serial killers abused animals as children................I am just saying.

Seriously, if you have no idea what you're talking about, especially on matters in the medical field, it's best to shut the hell up and let professionals deal with it.

I once saw a bumper sticker and it never rang so true...

"Can't feed it, don't breed it"

As with cars, houses, children and just about anything in life; they all come with responsibility, maintenance and problems. I understand some people just don't have the money when their animal needs a 1000$ surgery when they come in my clinic. Yet, it's hard for me to have sympathy when they aren't even trying at all.

Update

I called up the animal hospital today and they only had a appointment at 4pm which I can't make because I will be at work. Sooo they let me come in this morning. They took 4 xrays nothing is broken thank god but they are thinkin he tore some liagments in his paw that's why he keeps on holding it up. They can't find any breaks on the x-rays. So they gave me some pain medication for him to take. The next few days he can't climb steps or jump down from anything and take it easy. Thanks everybody for the good advice. Yes, I'm an animal lover since my chances of having kids are about 2%. I treat snickers like he's my son. I received him as a gift from a co-worker 3 years ago when my dog passed on and I truly appreicate his presence.

All of my dogs were always free to roam wherever they wanted to go. As for the reason they just don't come back one day is most likely because it wandered to a different farm, caused some mistchief, and got shot. And if thats the case then he deserved it. If someone elses dog comes around and gets in with the livestock and starts runnin em around makin em lose weight (and in effect making me lose money) I have no problems putting it down.

I have never once abused any of my animals. Just can't justify paying someone to do something I can do myself.

Dogs never go hungary around here...if they don't get enough dog food then there is dead cattle or sheep they can go eat, which they do....and thats their natural food and probably get more nutrients from that than any dry dog food could give them.

We keep dogs around for different reasons than you city folk. They aren't so much pets as they are insurance. Have 4 Great Pyranese as guard dogs....they would never hurt a human, but they kill any coyote that comes around lookin for an easy supper.

Regardless of what you may think of me for not really caring too much if my dogs live or die, I take good care of them. Had the best golden retriever ever for 9 years. I'd even consider it my friend. Then one day he took 2 of the females and disappeared. Ever since I don't get too attatched to the dogs.

The fact that you are ok with your dogs getting shot if it wanders onto someone elses property is stupid. I know pleanty of farmers, with dogs, and cattle and they care more for their animals than you seem to. Not to make this into a pissing party becuase that's not what this thread is about but no need to come $hi* on someone's parade just to seem like a "hard a$$ farmer". I don't blame your animals for running away, and there are tons of problems with animals eating dead animals. Yes, it WAS their natural food, thousands of years ago before they became domesitacted. Domestication = changes in body systems. Thanks for reminding me why I decided to work with animals and not humans.
