Animal Advice
I have a lil toy poodle name Snickers. My folks were watching him yesterday while I was at work and he jumped off the couch and fell down. He's 4 but everything on him is super tiny since he weighs about 10 pounds. He has been walking on 3 since yesterday. He's fine if I touch his leg but as so as I just the paw he yelps or tries to bite me. There is nothing stuck on his paw and I don't know what is causing his pain? I don't work till 2pm tomorrow so I will go take him the animal hospital but I was wondering how long a fracture takes to heal on a animal?

Take him in, and get it looked at. It will take a weeks for something like that to heal if it is fractured (and treated properly) but will need x-rays to verify the problem. If left untreated it could either heal improperly, or take longer if it gets aggrivated

What toasty said. I have an English Bulldog and she went rumbling down the stairs
too fast yesterday and injured her rear leg. Taking her to the vet tomorrow just to be safe. |

Take her to the Vet, better to have her leg X-rayed and examined than the guess what it might be...

vet = waste of money (unless it's needed for livestock) Just get some wood, make a splint and tape it up. It'll get over it eventually. In the mean time some tylenol in it's food will ease it's pain.

'Do NOT give your dog TYLENOL!!!
Acetaminophen is toxic to dogs. You can give ASPIRIN. (not enteric coated though, because it appears that dogs do not digest this coating well and whole aspirins have been found in dogs stool.) ASK YOUR VET for proper dosage. Don't go on the advice of some unknown person on the internet. TALK TO YOUR VET.'

I knew an owner like you. Her dog was bitten by a raccoon. She decided to be cheap and bandage up the wound herself. Two weeks later, she calls us and says her dog is sick. Turns out the wound had become infected and the tissue surrounding it had necrotized, you could see dead tissue and bone in it. The infection had spread through the dog's body and it was immediately euthanized. You could smell rotting flesh in the clinic for hours after the dog had been euthanized. This owner wanted to save a few bucks but ended up paying hundreds of dollars for euthanasia and disposal of her dog. To the OP, take the dog to the vet as soon as possible. Waiting will only make the injury worse. We can do X-rays in less than five minutes on a slow day. If it isn't too serious, like a sprain or something, some pain meds such as Rimadyl and rest will do. If it actually is fractured, he'll probably need a cast or splint of some sort. Could take a few weeks to heal depending on the severity. Again, do NOT follow Big Brunsy's "advice." Get the dog to the vet.

And for the record, the reason our services cost so much is because we pay a crapload for our education. You should see my bills for school. The average vet school graduate has well over $200k in debt with a starting salary of maybe $60k/year if you're lucky. If you open your own clinic, you have to buy a ton of equipment, none of which is cheap.
And with the industry as it is right now, I don't see charges dropping any time soon. I may not even have a job this summer.

My feeling exactly! Vet is a waste.............Tylenol People that know little best be silent! ![]() Anyway, you should always get to a vet ASAP. If it begins to heal incorrectly it can lead to a lifetime of pain, or they will have to re-break it to set it! Good Luck, poor dog!

Acetaminophen(tylenol) gets it's bad rap because it is often given in to high of a dose from a pet owner that didn't consult a vet plus it is very toxic to cats and some people get that confused. As for the guy that said a vet is a waiste of money and just splint it, He must really love his animals or he doesn't have any to begin with. Would you do the same for one of your kids if they fell and then had a limp with pain? I don't think so. I would have taken him to the vet the same day. if you wait to long and the leg is broken that can cause more problems. |

Another thing, it would probably be best to rest him until tomorrow. No excessive movement.
