I believe Blizzard puts out some pretty quality games. You could even say cutting edge... no one can deny WoW and all it has become. Not to mention everything that led up to it.
But that being said, I think their focus on WoW was a bit too strong, and really started to polarize them into just the WoW company. It's now great to see SC2 finally in the last stages of completion. I'm curious exactly how it has evolved (hope the quality is still intact). But it's not what I'm looking forward to. Wake me when the D3 beta comes out

12 year old game with shinny new graphics? No thanks.
However it is better than the pile of junk known as Supreme Commander 2. Damn multiplatform ruins everything. |

And just like UO it only works for so long. Even though it worked, it only worked on the lets say less smart folks who fall into those fashion fad hype roles that make you feel cool to be apart of it but its only just to milk you dry. [No way would I ever pay that much for a game and a monthly fee to play.] Like all those companies that charge ya $5.99 a month to put a pic of a girl in a bikini on your cell phone. People wise up after a while and the new hype fad that you gotta be cool and have that plus the new daily ring tones, fades away when folks realize its a self destructive cycle to milk you dry by playing on your need to fit in. The southpark episode on WOW was so accurate. Only way to get anywhere in the game is to sit there 24/7 365 turning into a fat lump that has no purpose outside the game. StarCraft was always a 3rd rate game on the Blizz scale, WOW and Diablo swapped 1-2nd all the time, but StarCraft was ubar lame, I don't know anyone who played it back then, cept girls. The real successful model to copy is GTA, they survived and will prosper for years to come. 1 price to pay, with common sense moves forward in technology, sticking to their core fans needs. All other games have gone the wrong way. Quake is dead, Doom is dead, they ruined Duke Nukem with a sidescroller, Unreal turned into UT and still died, AOE dead.................... Folks wonder why I still got a copy of WinMe loaded, so I can still play all the cool games, when they were still cool, that won't run on anything past Me. |

Even though it won't last forever, I don't think anything with 11.5 million subscribers can be compared to a "$5.99 bikini app"... Yes, some of those subscribers from the US can be stereo-typed as "fat lumps playing 24/7 365", but thats because many WoW players are carry overs from previous popular MMORPG games that did require excessive amounts of time to play. But what WoW has done is made it a semi-casual game that you can play for a little if you want and still feel like you did something. Its easier than ever to get right in and experience the core features of the game, and spend less than an hour on your computer. It can be considered a family friendly game (General Chat topics aside) where parents and kids play together. My wife and I play, yet we have a 14 month old son and still find plenty of time to spend with him and participate in the world outside of the computer room. Its not different than paying $15 extra a month on your cable bill so you can watch movies from time to time. It's just personal preference Now, back to StarCraft. I don't know any girls that played it. My friends and I used to play a lot back in the day. We would have 8 of us at someones house for a LAN party and play Quake 3 and StarCraft for hours. Yes we were nerds, but we had fun! And we were the ones these games were geared for. Now they are making them more open to the masses. Its not just shinny new graphics. While the overall gameplay may feel similar (as with most RTS games), its a completely new experience. The majority of the units are new, maps have much more depth and interaction, and they have completely overhauled Battle.net to be much more user-friendly.

Also, I started playing WoW a few weeks ago. I should probably quit, I find myself on it too much. I have been playing MMO's for like 5 years now. Fun stuff.

Maybe it wasn't your style, but calling a great game like this 'lame' is a bit far. I don't like the Final Fantasy games that much, but I'm not about to put them down because I recognize and respect their greatness in their realm.

Also, jcamaro has the WoW thing nailed down about right. WoW had moved to a very casual game that anyone can get into and you don't have to spend a lot of time on it if you don't want to. Myself and a lot of fellow Marines played it while we were in, it was a great way to pass the time when you couldn't get out of the barracks.

The thing that I loved about WoW was the theorycrafting. Maximizing my gear to attain the highest DPS or best healing. I was in a raiding guild so it was important to maximize your character. With the changes Blizz is making to WoW they are dumbing it down to the point it's no longer fun for a lot of the "hardcore" gamers. I understand the need to make the game fun and accessible for everybody I just miss the days when you worked hard and the result was the Tier 2 armor set that not everybody could get unless you could devote the time. Oh well. Those days are gone for me.

Okay, played it several times. The game play is really smooth. Video is fantastic at default settings, same with audio. I'm sure someone with a better system than I have would have even better results. I finally found a way to play the computer after talking with an old guild mate from WoW. The computer AI is about as dumb as a box of rocks so it's really easy to win. I haven't tried it against an actual person yet.
I don't have any screen shots yet but will try to Fraps a video sometime today.
