Sorry, there is a large bloc of environmental lawmakers that do not want anyone driving for most any reason much less pleasure. Sad thing is is that all those emissions get thrown on the evil utility companies who run on evil natural gas, coal, and nuclear power.

I don't think this will happen in a couple of years. In a decade it might be possible. Despite the use of the ecoboost engine in Ford's trucks, I still see the trucks as having a hard time doing any serious hauling and towing work without the torque capabilities of the v8.

Aside from this, even with the power capabilities from turbocharging and supercharging, its my opinion that the appeal of cars such as the Camaro SS, the Corvette and a high performance Mustang will be seriously compromised with the absence of the v8. I'll go further in saying that the Corvette and Camaro SS could be forced into retirement with the demise of the v8.

I realize that the phasing out of the v8 will be eminent (in a time period of decades as opposed to a couple of years). It will be a sad day IMO for muscle car fans when that day comes.

Yep, electricity is magical. Nothing environmentally damaging happens on the other side of the plug-in. There's no majority of global production from coal and natural gas. Nor is there the likelihood that entire mountain ranges would be leveled and strip mined for heavy metals for battery packs, copper for wiring or lightweight metals for reducing mass. Not to mention the need for trillions of dollars in materials to upgrade the existing grids to support the plug-in hybrid/full electric model beyond a niche market. It's all just magicky.

I don't think the V8 will disappear entirely, but they might be high dollar and exclusive.

The environmentalist will like Electric and Hybrid vehicles until everyone has one. Then the will be evil too

Bottom line is that they hate people

Thought Chrysler announced a couple of years ago that they were doing away with v8s by 2020.

There is a chance ford and others will nix v8's in the coming years. The good thing is technology is saving us this time from having to deal with anemic boat anchors for engines for the sake of emissions/mpg's. If i have to settle for a 450hp turbo 6cyl camaro i think ill survive. But if major breakthroughs in the future bring us substantial emission reductions or mpg's through the roof for internal combustion engines, you can bet the v8 would make some kind of comeback

I seem to remember that hydrogen was being thrown around as an option to be retrofitted to existing internal combustion engines. I'll search the bowels of the interwebs to see if I can find that article.

I don't know why people think this is an either/or situation. The number of cylinders has little to do with it. There is nothing inherent about a V6 design that will make a 3.8L version of it more efficient than a 3.8L V8. There are just some packaging considerations where a 90-degree V8 makes more sense than a 60-degree V6. There is plenty of room to put either in a truck, but some cars simply can't accommodate the height of a 60-degree engine or the width of a 90-degree (or DOHC) engine. I'm pretty sure Ford will keep all options open so they can stay competitive.

Would probably be the dumbest thing Ford has ever done. Second only to putting a V6 in a FordGT.

I honestly think the GT will be cool as hell. But they cut their potential market in half by removing 2 cylinders. Guarantee it.
