I still have my '79 but no longer the 6.6L 403 olds engine. Now a 505 stroker with more mods going on! I'm glad year One has upgraded so many parts for these cars and I hope they continue with it!

This is definitely one of the sexiest cars ever to be made by Pontiac. The car that followed then became the Knight Rider.. I don't understand why Pontiac messed up the design afterward but I'm glad at least the Pontiac soul will live on in the 2010 Camaro SS and hopefully beyond.

In 1977, California had the option to come with the Oldsmobile 403 V8 which probably wasn't in the movie car, even though the shaker sticker for it was also "6.6 Litre". The desirable powertrain is the code W72 Pontiac 400 rated at a bit more horsepower (220) but a tiny bit less torque (320) mated with the 4-speed manual tranny, which the movie didn't have. The only immediate sign of a W72 engine other than the buildsheet or trim tag were chrome valve colors and the sticker on the shaker saying "T/A 6.6" instead "6.6 Litre."

Ergo, the movie car probably had the standard code L78 Pontiac 400.

... ... God, I miss Trans Ams. :\
My brother had the t/a 6.6 - that was an AWESOME car! But it was a W72 Auto -

If I remember correctly - they started using up those Olds 403's in many of the 1978 model year cars......and they were less desirable.

Sounds right. O-403s were notorious. Essentially a bored 350 block IIRC, and as such took so much out of the cylinder walls without designing adequate cooling that the thing had to have a freaking Cessna prop on the front to keep the engine cool.

Still want one, though..

The 400 engine marked as 6.6 Liter on the hood scoop had 185 hp in 77 & 78. The T/A 6.6 marked scoop had 200 hp in 77 and 220 hp in 78. For 79 the T/A marked hood scoops were the (220hp) 400 and the 6.6 Liter were the 403 Olds engines with 185 hp. You could opt for the 301 cu.in. (150 hp) engine for a $ credit on the final cost of the car but this engine became standard for 1980.

My first car was a 1980 T/A had a 4.9 Liter engine in it..

I sold it when I moved to where I am now and this girl I work with bought it from but she side-swiped a bus with it..

I lucked out and found it at the wrecakage place(its not a junkyard) its a place where a bunch of old cars are and mine is there..

So me and my son are going to be picking it up soon so we can fix it up..

I want him to have this as his first car since it was my first car...

I figured we could get it done in 3 years when he will be 16..

Thats all he has been talking about since I brought it up lol
