I hate to break it to you, but toyota almost always ranks first in initial and long term quality and reliability. they didn't get where they are by accident

Back in the 80s and 90s. Toyotas are garbage these days. Every other manufacturer short of the Chinese brands outclasses them.

Cheap materials, shoddy build quality, antiquated technology, focusing on volume rather than quality products. Toyota wanted to become GM so badly that they're making all the same mistakes.

yea, but they rank at the top of every quality and reliability list. I'm not saying that as an Toyota guy, I've never owned one. but it is what it is.

I believe they also halted the Cruze sales as of yesterday. That one is a little concerning as I own a 13' Cruze. Haven't been driving it though (It's back at home).

Not an excuse but makes some sense
I was told the ignition switch problem was taken care of in '08. BUT some doofus kept the same part number on the modified one, and now they can't tell which cars have the old one or new one. Real smart.anyway, since ours were built after '08, should be fine.

I am more interested in finding out more about this than the recall.

(if there is more info out, I am not aware of it yet. Been on vacation all week, and hiding from the rain at the moment.)

I'm not concerned at all. I'm curious to see if my 2014 Cruze DD is added to the latest recall, but I trust that if it is GM will take care of it if it is. I believe GM is being extra proactive lately as the congressional hearings are coming up and we as consumers benefit from that.

As far as comparing Toyota and GM (I've owned both), since the bankruptcy GM's quality has made incredible strides and from my experience the difference is neglible. So much so that I currently own all Chevrolets.

So 12 deaths have been linked to the switches and 2 million cars have been recalled. You have a better chance of being killed by lightning than this defective switch. And while GM is taking the blame, many of the victims were drunk or not wearing a seat belt, or both.

so how many people have to get killed before it should be recalled? don't you think you should be able to buy a car an know if there is a potentially deadly defect the manufacture has to fix it?

This can be an issue in any vehicle, ignition switches aren't designed to have a ton of swinging weight hanging on them. Hit a good bump and the added weight bouncing or swinging will turn the key off. At the very least, it's putting added wear on the ignition.

What I don't understand is how that results in fatal crashes, IMO knowing how to safely control a car that dies at highway speed should be part of learning to drive, either reach down and restart it, or coast to the side of the road. People are too quick to panic. This should be taught in drivers ed, along with skid recovery and other emergency training.

Just my 2 cents but as the bailout of GM is seen as a centerpiece of political economic "success" I doubt anything bad will happen to GM. The switches in question are from 2005-2009 I believe and not for the Camaro model line.

The latest I saw is that relates to axle shafts on turbo 1.4 models. Halt sales are pretty common for recalled cars, better to fix them before the sale then have to get the owners to bring them back later.
