So very true and the crooks get better every day. I wish the NICB files could be opened without having a case number.
The NICB is missing the boat on that one...they could make money hand over fist (same with Chevrolet & their records) if they wanted to. We've been begging them for years, and had talked to them a couple times about using an intermediate party to handle the front end stuff so the NICB could simply be paid to do what it already does. But they're not interested...

Not necessarily. NICB (National Insurance Crime Bureau) files do exist for VINs way back when. They deal mainly with fraud types of things; vehicle VIN ever reported stolen, salvage title, stuff like that. So basically they track information pertaining to a vehicles VIN. They CAN tell shipping invoice date and invoice #, and the date it was delivered to what dealer/location. They can also tell you if the car has ever been shipped out of the country (legally of course), from where on what date and delivered to what location on what date, as well as other shipping information (shipping company, invoice #/shipping document). They CANNOT and DO NOT have specific information as to what options, drivetrain on older cars that don't have a VIN identifying letter, etc. the car was built with. It can tell you it had a V8 but it can't tell you what V8. So as for proving a car is "as built" by the factory they are of no help. I have seen the NICB file for my car.

I would love to have that information.

Yes... ...a search of my post history from a couple of months' ago may give some "insight"...

Can I PM you a VIN to search?

Unless it's a Pontiac...or was built or sold in Canada...or was a '69 COPO, you're kinda on your own, sadly... Each State/Province has a title search "capability", but who/what/when/where is the "problem". And I do not personally have those answers...

"They built 20,302 Z/28 Camaros in 1969, over 25,000 of them still exist..."

Seems every other '69 Camaro you see, nowadays, is a "Z/28"-badged badboy...and a good portion of the remainder are COPO-clones...

Certainly makes you wonder when my "sig" will become a reality... If there is a missing nameplate in North America, it certainly is Z/28!

You would think the NICB would WANT to prevent stolen cars from trading hands but you can't just ask them if a VIN is hot or not. WTH?

Sadly, that's a fact...

Witness Beach Boy's Al Jardine and his travails with a "recreated" HemiCuda @ B-J, 2 years ago...

This car was on first gen. sites for a while. Quite a story behind it.

Yes - the search for stolen or totaled record looks for theft or damage records that are within the last 5 years. Not much help if anything happened to it say 7 years ago.:(

Too bad every GM Division didn't have something similar in place...although GM-Canada can supply the same sort of documentation/verification for any GM product built and/or sold in Canada, '46-forward. COPOs, Z/28s, SSs etc. are just a call from verification. http://www.gm.ca/gm/english/shopping/parts/vintage

Awesome, thanks for the feed back guys. I was looking at early 70's firebirds. There seem to be quite a few out there in seemingly good condition that are reasonably priced
