I've got a Grand Am ... close enough to the Alero. I've had a couple issues with it since I bought it, nothing much but nothing to brag about either

If you want a decent little car, get a Stratus or one of its 'twins'.
Tad older than he was thinking of. Plus, my parrents had a 'cloud car' of that vintage and had a number of problems, though it was a V6 not an I4

You may be OK with most American cars from 07 up, but then again, look at the Aveo. People pretty much hate it. I hear mostly good things about Saturns strangely enough, but I think a lot of the older models are ugly. A lot of subarus are known to have some major engine problems, so watch out for that. No matter what, just research reliability ratings. if looks aren't important, just get whatever has the best reliability.
Oh I know, each region has its specialties: domestics do trucks and large cars well, Asians do small cars well, and Europeans do luxury cars well.

One other car that I thought of tonight as an alternative is the Mazda3, though I know nothing of its reliability.

Why do you hate Cobalts so much? I like them for what they are; same as the civics, I like them for DDs also. BTW, you pretty much crossed out everything besides a neon!

Because, for lack of a better explanation, I felt like a total knob when driving it. The feeling didn't go away when I hopped into a G5. It did when I sat in the Grand Am.

I say Toyota Camry! My dad just traded his 11 year old camry for a new 2011 Camry SE. The old one was still strong and in great shape but he just wanted to trade up and thats why he bought one again. Never once did that car stall or give us issues.

not really a small car either, but a late 90's, early 2000's grand prix with the 3.8L is a good car. my mom has a 99 GTP with over 180K on it i think and it has held up very well. also, my sister has an 02 and its done pretty well so far

The Toyota 11 years ago is not the Toyota of today.

One of the best cars I've ever owned was a Honda Fit S, paddle shifters and all - 35 MPG. Mazda 5s are also great if you need some more room and don't mind the sort of minivanish look. VW Golfs/GTIs can be great cars too!

I had an '07 Focus that was pretty decent, got around 32 mpg hwy. Drove it for around 50,000 miles without any issue.

Smart Car, they are played out and prolly cheaper to buy now, if you don't mind driving a golf cart.
