Used small car suggestions

My brother is getting ready to replace his dying Cavalier and he's thinking about getting an 07 Hyundai Elantra. Generally, he wants an efficient, reliable compact. He won't buy a new car. Its hard for me to come up with alternatives for him. After driving a Cobalt and a G5 when looking for my car, I can't endorse either of them. A personal hatred of the Civic eliminates it, same goes for Toyota so the Corolla is out too.

Whats left? Focus? Sentra?

My friend just picked up a 2001 Alero coupe. It's a decent little car, cheap too.

Grand Am coupe
Regal base (little big but reliable as all hell after all)
Escort ZX2 (unless he's afraid of a clutch)
Neon/Caliber
Cobalt/G5

I personally liked the Cobalt/G5 and the LS manuals were cheap and reliable little cars regardless.

The focus is a good car. I had a SVT and beat the piss out of it every single day for 2 years and the alternator and a intake manifold clip thing where the only 2 problems it ever had. If he likes to play it will handle right with a C5 without a problem stock. A regular focus wont but the SVT with a 6 speed trans is a cheap car thats a ton of fun.

Considering your area, look at some Subarus. They are great year round cars. Either an Impreza or a Legacy.

Depending on how much he wants to spend, the 08+ Focuses are great little cars. the 10 i drove absolutely surprised me. they are built well, drive well, and get great fuel mileage.

Any of the AWD subaru or Legacy products, which can be fast but first of all very safe in all conditions.

Thumbs up

not so much a 'small car' but I enjoyed my 1st gen (95-00) Dodge Stratus with the DOHC inline four with the auto tran. it got great mileage, I could get almost 2 full weeks to a full tank driving in town. was roomy (could fit up to 5 in a pinch), decent trunk (flip down seat I could carry a 5 plus foot long box in it). If you want a decent little car, get a Stratus or one of its 'twins'.

Don't shoot me, but if he's looking for a used compact, go asian. In general US and European manufacturers haven't been building the highest quality or most visually appealing (well US hasn't) compact cars except for recent years. You may be OK with most American cars from 07 up, but then again, look at the Aveo. People pretty much hate it. I hear mostly good things about Saturns strangely enough, but I think a lot of the older models are ugly. A lot of subarus are known to have some major engine problems, so watch out for that. No matter what, just research reliability ratings. if looks aren't important, just get whatever has the best reliability.
