I think what he is saying is that the cost of the infrastructure for your neighbor is ridiculously high versus the cost of a modern day car. That 'Free' you mention is anything but.

Break it down this way. You can buy a ton of cars for say 30K (or less) that seat 4 or 5 and get 35mpg. I don't know what model of Tesla your neighbor drives but they are anything but cheap. The 75D is the least expensive at roughly 65K.(and that is after a $7500 government credit/subsidy)

So you are now paying twice as much for a car to be "green and free," then you have to setup the infrastructure which also costs $$$.

Going Green is anything but free and costs a LOT more than an ICE vehicle. And that is why the first link is very valid that Stex posted.

Going green is nothing but a money scam.

It's funny how these threads always trend to one group insisting that it has to be all one way and another group insisting that it has to be all the other way. It will either be "everything will be 100% electric" or it will be "here's why it is impossible". There really is a whole lot of grey area in the middle.

For some people, including performance car drivers, electric makes total sense. For others it makes no sense at all. Because of that, we'll more than likely see a rich mix of electric performance cars (Porsche Mission E, BMW i8 Electric) electric family cars (Chevrolet Bolt EV, Nissan Leaf, Tesla Model 3) and electric SUVs (Ranger Rover Evoque, Jaguar i-Pace). But there will still be many, many options of ICE powered vehicles for those for whom EV makes no sense. True, there will be fewer options, but there will still be options. Don't like electric? Don't buy one. Think electric is the future? You'll have options.

So Tesla donated the solar panels and the battery to her for free? And there is no life span on either item?

My biggest thing with Electric becoming the "norm", it needs to get the ranges up to where most gasoline engine vehicles are. Right now, if I want to visit my dad, it is a 9 hour drive (586 miles) which I can do stopping once for gas with that stop for gas, bathroom, snack resulting in maybe a 30 minute stop. With an All Electric car, that same trip (using the Bolt as an example) I have to stop 2 times to charge up and those charge ups are really going to add time, 9 hour drive, DC fast charging gives 90 miles in 30 minutes which means to top it off will take about 1 1/2 hours so that puts me at 9 hour drive, 2 stops of 90 minutes, so 12 hours. So now it takes me an extra 2 1/2 hours to make the same trip. And that range is going to be shortened if there are accidents on the way or other incidents to cause delays.

I have no problems with Electric cars, I just don't think they are the answer yet. The range needs to be improved, which will happen, just we aren't there yet.

I'm in the same boat. Once an EV gets to 300-400 miles on a charge, and fast charging tech will get me 300-400 miles in at most 15-30 minutes, I won't see them as completely practical.

That being said, I'd definitely consider a Bolt EV for short commutes and stuff.
