In general I don’t care for the concept of an HOA and my neighborhood doesn’t have one.

However, there is a guy who runs a tree-trimming business who lives near the entrance to my subdivision, Often he has a big truck and trailer parked in front of his house. One has to be careful when turning onto the street for what is basically one-way traffic. That truck often remains overnight.

And my neighbor across the street has begun having multiple garage sales per month. I don’t complain about someone who needs to clean out and liquidate his junk, but I think this guy is haulng stuff in and basically has a home business. I am getting tired of all the car loads of unknown people parked in front of my house just about every Saturday morning.

Do you live within a city boundary? Most cities have an ordinance against commercial vehicles and trailers parked in the street.

When you buy the house in the subdivision, you sign up for it. If you don’t like it, sell it and move out. I don’t live in one because it’s not my flavor but bitching about something you got yourself into is just asinine.

You don't have to live where there's a HOA to object to the idea that other people not in any official township/county/state government capacity get to micro-manage peoples' lives other than their own. I get that there's 'reasonable' and there's 'unreasonable', or that there's 'temporary' and there's 'permanent'. But more than a few HOAs appear to be incapable of making the same distinctions.

Some years ago, a man I worked with was getting ready to downsize into an over-55 community. They made him sell his upscale pickup truck (not some dilapidated Sanford and Son POS) because residents there were forbidden to park trucks within the community.

I love living in a community with a strong HOA. I have been here 20 years and the neighborhood is as beautiful as the day I built my home. I've been fined a couple times for not getting my trash cans in the garage, but that is a small price to pay for a nice place to live.

I grew up in the country where I built my own moto cross track in the backyard and we had a 300 yard shooting range. Just what every growing boy should have. I see he benefits of both types of neighborhoods. Just don't sign the deed unless you are OK with the HOA.

May I ask what do they do for $400 a month from every homeowner? Sounds like extortion to me.

That's ridiculously intolerant and on the face of it does not cut you any slack for situations where you couldn't get them in the garage on their schedule. You're being treated like a child whose allowance gets docked or withheld for running outside to play without putting his dinner dish and silverware in the sink.

Being called to appear before the HOA to explain your crime would be more in line with what you didn't do here.

HOA’s take care of the neighborhood common areas, insures uniformity for lawn care, parking, holiday yard displays to include sports teams AND military appreciation guidelines and limitations and many other restrictions/“guidelines”. These restrictions are always extremely strict to the highest degree. The purpose being to hopefully have a peaceful, nice looking neighborhood to live in, keep the riff raff out and hold properly values.

The down side is. You own a house where you’re renting the property it sits on.

$400 a month though.. you can do a lot for that especially if you add how many homes there are... My house payment was less than that.

In Colorado, it more than likely goes towards... snow removal on sidewalks and roads, trash service and recycling, pool maintenance and lifeguard, park maintenance, common area maintenance, fitness center and coach, streetlights, street and sidewalk maintenance.

This is what it covers in my hood, but my dues are ~$250 a qtr.

I’m with ya man. I live out in the country. You couldn’t pay me to live in the burbs. Especially in a HOA. But I can see the appeal to some folks, especially if they’re busy and like to travel or have kids and such.

I live in a HOA neighborhood. I don't agree with every rule but I agreed to abide by them when I purchased my home. I enjoy living in a clean, well maintained neighborhood. My yearly HOA fee is only $275.
