Smells like BS to me. For one thing, every Chinese foreign student that I encountered in university was VERY non-confrontational, particularly when it comes to cultural differences. Not to say this one can't be different (everybody is unique in their own special way), but it definitely doesn't sound like anyone I've encountered for it to be genuine.


There are a number of degrees of fakery that it could be:

• It could really have been sent by the guy thats going to be this kids new roommate ... but was done purely as a joke.
• Or the one who posted it could legitimately be a prospective OSU student and they wrote it themselves so that they could get a pat on the back from a bunch of strangers going 'damn foreigners!'.
• Or it could be written by a total rando for the above reason.

Each one becomes increasingly likely just due to sheer volume of potential dicks available to write it.

It depends, I think the whole "keyboard warrior" mentality comes into play even with foreign students. It's a lot easier to say all that stuff behind a monitor and keyboard than in person. I know my roommates freshman year did stuff online they never would in real life, and even then, at our roommate agreement meeting, they both didn't want me having friends over past like midnight or something, which I still did on a regular basis.

If it's legit, I'd be willing to bet they wouldn't do or say anything in person if all of their "conditions" were violated.

Most keyboard warriors never meet the people they're being dicks to -which is why they feel empowered to be dicks in the first place. But if that post is to be believed, that guy isn't just going to meet the person but be living with them for the better part of a year. Not going to say nobody is that stupid (there are an awful lot of stupid people out there) but it doesn't really fit the archetype.

Meanwhile, someone on Reddit who thinks racism is funny? Not exactly uncommon.

And when I read it, it just ticks so many boxes for potential outrage. Its a foreign student so that automatically triggers an 'us vs them' (by the way, most of the foreign students I knew lived off campus in an apartment, not in res or in normal student housing). Also, since its a foreign student, odds are they're pretty well off. Around here, foreign tuition rates are several times what it is for Canadian students. Maybe its different down there, I don't know. Then you have this person make a bunch of demands, which ties into sentiments of 'stupid entitled millennials' or 'damn foreigners telling 'MERICA what to do' ... take your pick. Or go with both if you want, I don't care. And finally, the demands being made are in the name of anti-fun, for lack of a better descriptor. That flies in the face of every depiction of college life in pop culture, and so its an affront to the very notion what its like to go college.

I can't think that its a coincidence that all that happened. Its perfectly crafted to irk almost everybody in some way. The odds of that happening by pure random chance feels absurdly low to me. Especially in comparison to somebody doing it deliberately.
