Unhappy Letting go of my Camaro...need help

Well it looks like a lot of the people on here who told me getting the car wasn't a good idea were right. I have a job that pays me really well, which is why I thought I could afford this car, and technically, I can. But I now have to cut back at work because of college. I'm going to school for Pharmacy and my classes are a lot harder than I expected, so I need extra time for homework, studying, getting tutored, etc.

Which means working only maybe 2 days a week. I won't be able to pay for it anymore, so I'm going to sell it/trade it in while I can.

Now I do commute to school every day, and spend a lot of time in the car. It takes about 25 minutes to get to school, and that's with no traffic. I already have over 2200 miles on my 2LT/RS ABM and I took delivery on 8/12.

So after I sell the Camaro, I will have about $5500 (or actually maybe around $6,000) left to myself for either something used that I don't have to make a payment on, or a cheap, new car with a warranty. I looked at the Cobalt, but I wasn't really impressed (I know I can't expect much with my budget). I'm considering maybe the Honda Civic? *hides* I can work a lot more hours in the summer, and when I'm on break from school. So I kinda don't want a payment of anything more than $250 per month.

So yeah, it looks like I'll have to wait until I graduate to get a Camaro. I didn't want to listen to anyone, and the more people told me it wasn't a good idea, the more I wanted it. I guess it's a part of growing up, you live and learn. I did save up all that money for the down payment, but I guess I'll save in the end, not having to make that $369 a month car payment. :(

Any suggestions from here? This time, I'm actually willing to take advice.

Ant, find something used that you can pay off. That way you won't have the burden of a car payment to think about. Find something that is in good shape so you don't have to worry about repairs. Good luck!

Oh and it takes a big person to admit publically that they were wrong. Nothing wrong with making mistakes. Each one is a learning experience.

Focus all of your enegy on your schooling. You have your entire life to buy toys. If you have to work more to pay for your car then your studying will most likely suffer. Get something that you can afford and when you graduate it will all be worth it. Not sure I would look at buying a cheap used car though. If you are going to school and working as much as you can you will want a reliable car. My advice, ( if you were my son or daughter) buy a newer car you can afford and drive it until you graduate.

Be sure to check on inusurance rates also BEFORE you buy that cheaper car. Just because the car is cheap doesn't mean the insurance will be. You may find Hondas or other "tuner-type" car models may be cheap...but the insurance may be high due to theft or accident records for that particular model. You may find that one Honda is cheap while the other is expensive. I'd see what you could find that is newer and still has a warranty-as you don't want to put out alot on repairs either. I'd stay away from 3rd and 4th gen cars in your situation as I think you'd be better served with something "sporty" but reasonable on gas, payments, and insurance.

You might check out dealer lots for leftover G5's even...might could find one a dealer wants to unload to clear out inventory. I bought a G6 for mudane duty at our house...its plain jane, but it gets the job done and I don't mind leaving it in the driveway (none of our other cars sits out).

Good luck with your decision and THANK YOU (with all sincerity) for not becoming another "whining victim" in the world of finance. There are plenty of people that aren't as smart as you that will stretch their budget to its seams to buy a car/house/boat/tv/etc. then sit around and b*tch about not having money, not being able to repair things, etc.

You seem like you've got a bright future...the Camaro will ALWAYS be there in one form or another when you are ready for it.

It takes a big man to admit his mistakes. Sounds like you learned a valuable lesson (or two), so good for you.

If I were in your shoes, I'd look for a car that costs between $6k and $10k. A small loan to help you get a more reliable vehicle (which should be the main factor in your decision here) isn't a bad idea, but if you can get a car in good shape without taking out a loan, that would be ideal. Once you've finished school and have a solid job you can count on, then you can get another Camaro!

Thanks everyone for the support, I appreciate it. And yeah, I want something sporty, but also something that is good on gas and will be good in the rain and snow, because the winters can get pretty nasty here on Long Island. A RWD probably wouldn't be best for me.

Sorry to here about selling the car good luck with the sale how much are you looking to get out of the car? Seems Ebay cars are still pulling in some figures close to MSRP. If you are looking to get close to MSRP factor in GM Supplier and the $500 off being offered by several dealerships (figure approx $1500-$2000 off your window sticker). I am looking at a 2LT/RS, A6, sunroof, 20" polished looks like right at $30k with the GM Supplier.

If you are looking to stay in a Camaro let me know I have my wifes 2000 Camaro V6, A4, cloth, ttops, chrome rims, tires have 10k on them, 52k on the clock in cherry condition I am looking for $6k might take a little less (

Good to know your taking charge and putting school/work before you car. I'd rethink your decision about the Cobalt though. I've owned one since 06. It hasn't, in three years let me down. Its a good, reliable, cheap car. It'll get you from point A to B as good as any other car out there in its class.

Great choice, school is more important. You can buy great toys with a good education and a job. Cars will always be around. Good luck!

If you don't want it once, why get it again? Get a Hyundai and be done with it...
