Before checking into supplements-
1. Make sure your natural test levels are OK
2. Are you eating enough? One of the easiest ways to up your bench is gain weight
3. Is your recovery in order?
4. Are you overtraining? (most people don't realize they are
5. Are you undertraining?

Post up a workout session along with frequency. There might be a clue there.

I'm 46 and stuck at 225 bench.

it seems no matter how hard I work I'm stuck here at this size....im not unhappy.... I take whey protein pre and post...I get enough of that and am happy with my current physique.
I was just curious if its worth it and what brand is the most effective.
So are you worried about your physique or your bench?

If it's you bench feel free to post a video and I will help you.

I have 99 problems, but a bench ain't one.

Or you can email it if you don't feel comfortable.

If it's your physique ask someone else

I'm gonna make an educated guess it's # 4. Probably does flat, incline, decline, dumbbells, flies, and pec dec.....and 2 exercises for triceps.

So Monique improved her 17.2 score to 115 reps but 17.3 was terrible for her.

Her first attempt she managed 67 reps.....her second attempt she managed 70 reps.

So she is sitting at 203 worldwide right now which is just outside qualifying for Regionals. She is bummed but I told her not to be.....to be proud of herself. Goal was top 500 and she's doing much better than that.

first things first guys.....im 46

it seems the older I get the harder it is to make gains....as a matter of fact.... all I try to do is maintain anymore.
I'm sure if I REALLY REALLY wanted to make gains again I could hit up the creatine.
I know it works....but I feel like I'm just to old for all that crazy supplement stacking bs.

I used to love that stuff back in the day...
Who remembers Phosphagain?....lol

I take a multivitamin and get 50 g protein on workout days thru whey.....I eat plenty of red meat chicken pork salmon tuna peanut butter etc etc etc.

back in the phosphgain days I was 140lbs and could bench 250
squat 350.
then...

I got married had kids etc etc etc....stopped working out went to kids stuff for about 20 years gained 15 pounds and could barley press 145 when I first went back 2 years ago.

my first year back.... the first month... I trained like it was back in the day...man was that kinda stupid..well not really..lol....but I could read my body a lot better now so I cut back to twice a week heavy weight....low reps for 6 months and I grew back to my old size rather quickly....like my body remembered what it was like and said......oh yeah....we remember this guy....the problem was and is...the strength isn't there anymore...I mean 225 for an old 145 lb guy aint too shabby.... but I feel like I'm more dedicated now.....smarter...a better diet... I should be able to get back to my old numbers.....
but its been quite a while now....
I switched to less weight more reps....time under tension...ive tried to switch workouts.....idk....I just think.....
theres something missing.

I'm stuck at 225 for MONTHS.
I have accepted that 225 is it for an all natural 46yr old.....and that aint too bad...
I quit doing bench a month ago.... I just use dumbells and the incline bench... f....it

I guess this is what happens when you get old.....but damn it.... I want 250...lol

There are a number of things that can halt gains in strength and size. Assuming no physical or medical problems, diet, workouts, sleep, overtraining. Age isn't an excuse, you can still gain strength and size even at 62. but it does come a little slower than when young. As far as over the counter supplements there are many that claim to be beneficial but personally I think most are a waste. The benefits from whey and creatine are well documented but you still have to put the work in.

I'm 44....most of those that post in this thread are of the ummm "older" variety lol.

I've highlighted "what's missing". This is key in making improvement in any aspect of "exercise". How bad do you want it? And are you willing to do what it takes....

Like I requested earlier, post a video of you benching. And post what you do on bench day (I don't have a "chest" day, I have bench days).

But if you've been training you are right you are missing something. Could be some or all of the below....(like blake-b also stated)

Overtraining (although I don't really believe in this IF you have deload weeks)
Undertraining
Poor nutrition/recovery.....

But if your bench really lacks it's most likely a lack of tricep and upper back strength.

Hah maybe in age when compared to you, but....

This summer marks my 30 year anniversary weight training. I remember the day I decided to start lifting weights like it was yesterday. I was sitting on the toilet reading the local sports section and there was a big article on a local HS lifter named "Peanut" McCormick winning the state weightlifting title.

Inspired me tremendously as he was a 123lb lifter. I weighed about 110 at the time.

17.3 was not good for Monique. First attempt shown below she got 67 reps. 2nd try she got 70. She is sitting at 203rd worldwide which is 3 spots outside of qualifying for regionals.

Funny.....there hasn't been, yet always is, a repeat workout from earlier years open workouts. I told Monique yesterday I thought it would be 16.4 from last year which is:

13 Minute AMRAP

55 deadlifts
55 Wall Balls
55 calorie row
55 handstand push-ups.

It encompasses a lot of basic exercises that are always in the open and haven't been done yet this year. So last year she made 185 reps. She went ahead and did it again last night and improved 21 reps from last year.

So they announced it tonight and I nailed it. We are excited....should be a good event for her. She needs it after last week.
