I'm not sure about that. When I was in talks with my local dealer regarding a 2016 1LT last month (which I decided against because it was a 2.0T and I really want a V6), he was doing calculations with me and he subtracted the bonus tag incentive before he did taxes.

In Texas, your trade-in reduces the selling price. So you are taxed on the discounted selling price minus the trade-in value.

I looked at the link posted by bballr4567 above, and apparently I was wrong about NYS taxing vehicles. They do tax before the rebates are applied. I was getting confused because trade-in equities reduce the taxable amount. In that case, everything you mentioned seems fine to me.
