"Decimate" has a numerical meaning. It truly is a word misused so often the actual meaning is just about lost.

Decimation refers to a severe punishment in the Roman army. It was used to punish a group.

Nine out of a group of ten soldiers were ordered to kill the man with the proverbial short straw.

Rims as a slang for wheels. A rim is only part of a wheel, and it isn't even the attractive part.

And as Chris said, to decimate is to kill 1 in 10, not utterly destroy, like it's mostly used today.

Regarding words like "rims" and "decimation," know that sometimes words will change over time, when used incorrectly by enough people for enough time. Case in point: "Antivenin." For years, this was the word that represented an antidote for venom. However, since the word was first uttered, the less literate simply called it, "antivenom." It sorted of seemed to make more sense, to be perfectly honest, and it was easier than saying some new word, for those who already knew the word, "venom." And, since MOST people seem to be less literate, well, pretty much everybody said, "antivenom." Somebody using the word, "antivenin" would probably even be gently 'corrected' by others.

Eventually, doctors and scholars got tired of trying to correct the improper pronunciation. "Antivenin" has now been... uhhhh.... decimated, in favor of the now- accepted term, "antivenom." Even the medical industry has adopted, "antivenom."

I sort of think that if "rims" is a word used by MOST people to describe the metal part of their wheels, and everybody knows what they mean, then the word has developed its own definition, and is therefore a valid use of the word to describe the metal part.

(I still don't think, though, that even though 95% of Craigslist posts regarding tires describe how much thread life remains, that damn word will still be wrong. Always and forever. 'Nuff said.)

As far as rims, don't be surprised if I start telling car owners, "Nice spokes!" ... It's better'n "rims".

Better'n is my new word of the day.

My English teacher in high school hated me for a while. He handed out papers one day, which were outlines of our next study topic, soliliquys.

I made a production of pointing out his misspelling. He was okay with that, took it in stride.

However, he handed out "corrected" editions the following day... and goofed on the spelling again. Again, I pointed out the error.

Now, he damn sure should have had his ducks in a row on the third day... but he didn't. He gave us another handout, with a third--- incorrect--- spelling of the word, "soliloquy." Yes, I made a huge, comical production out of that one. I was the evil spelling Nazi, but, come on: This was an ENGLISH teacher!

He was pretty pissed off... for a long time. Eventually, we became friends, and laughed about it. However, MANY years later, I ran into him on the street one day... he said, "Hey, what's up there, Soliloquy?"

Good times...

That wouldn't have worked for many vehicles back in the day because most of them had hubcaps with steel wheels. Thus no spokes. Oh, I mean rims. Lol

Had a friend from the East Coast... he used the term, "You'ns" quite a bit, sort of a contraction/ amalgamation of, "you ones," meaning, "you people" (As in, "Are you'ns going to the party?"). He was surprised that folks out here on the West Coast had never heard that term.
