I've got a question - what would be good choices for a scope to fit a rifle chambered in.17 HMR?

My son picked one up a few days ago, just the rifle (it's a Savage A17 autoloader). We went to the range anyway, more to put a hundred or so rounds through it than anything, no scope, no sights, just the scope mounts.

I might just have to get one of these things for me, once NJ sees fit to issue me the necessary card.

I've been a Vortex fan for a while now. The only one I've used a lot is the Viper HS LR. Got one in the higher zoom range for .308 and .50bmg. It's tough to keep a scope on .50 without destroying it, and after reading reviews and considering their warrantee, you really can't go wrong with any of their optics.

How far are you shooting on average?

I think for the foreseeable future it'll be 300 yards and under. 300 is the longest distance available at the range where my son and I (and his oldest kid) have a membership. For the immediate future, probably 100 tops. It's literally been decades since I last shot more than a couple of rounds out of a long gun of any description, and since my son drives a Kenworth for a living he doesn't get a whole lot of chance to get out there either.

Yesterday's shooting was at much shorter distances, and while the little grooves in the scope mount are better than nothing, they sure aren't any substitute for real sights let alone a scope (think parallax error, nearly all of my shots at 25 yards were on the paper but left of center, so I wasn't getting my eye quite centered). Less successful at 50 yards, maybe 12 out of 20 on the paper and I bet the rest all went wide left.

Might go again tomorrow (Friday), as my son's still in town getting his truck fixed, his oldest daughter has the day off, and I'm retired meaning that my schedule is pretty flexible for such outings.

ANJRPC in Highland Lakes, NJ?

It's the only 300 yard facility I'm aware of in NJ. I'm there almost weekly.

Banger's Sport Shop / South Jersey Shooting Club in Hammonton (near the intersection of 73 and the AC Expressway).

Ah. Too bad. 131 miles from home. No wonder I wasn't aware of its existence.

Might head out into the back yard this weekend and bust off a few mags from the P85, providing there's no dairy cows on the back 40. Haven't fired that gun in about 20 years.
