Not numbers matching original, rather an ERA replica. As far as I understand from what he's told me, ERA kits tend to be the most faithful replicas.

The original plan was for us to build the motor while he was waiting on the chassis to be manufactured, but then this one popped up and he got it for quite the deal, and it had all the options he was looking for, and then some. So, instead of building a ride together, we can now go out and hit the roads, go to shows, and just enjoy our cars without all the fuss and trouble that would come from 2 amateurs building a motor for a car like this.

Thanks for all the compliments. I'll be sure to send him this thread soon

Sick ride! Always loved the Cobra. Was shopping for one of these for my boss last year, good times.

I've never felt the urge to own a classic car, but this one is a beauty.

I had a friend years ago that had an original 427 Cobra with the dual quad carbs. He took me for a ride from Los Gatos, CA to Santa Cruz over the mountain road. Holy $h!t that thing was so fast, and had monster torque. He had just got it out of the body shop after 3 years where they had a metalsmith remove all the dents and dings from the original aluminum body--without using any bondo. That black paint was absolutely flawless. I think it cost about $50,000 for the paint (in 1976 dollars).

Very nice, and a good choice.

Now get your Dad to take it out to an autocross so that he can find out what he can and can't get away with trying, under the safest possible conditions.

Fantastic looking ride!

Great story too, glad to hear that all of his years of hard work paid off

From what I've learned talking with pops, they can be cheap(ish) or really damn expensive. It's all in what you want. An original Shelby in good shape will run well into 6 figures (perhaps even close to 500k for some prime/rare examples) but the kit cars (like his) are more affordable, and can be built for as little as 30k, or up into the low 100k mark.

I'm not quite sure what he paid for it, but I'm guessing it was at/around the 50-60k mark, as that was what he originally budgeted for a build before deciding to purchase an existing one.

The closer to original specs you get, it seems the more expensive. I recently saw one for sale at a car show that had this same paint job, but a 454ci motor, and not even close to original spec trans/rear end. It was in mostly good shape (an obvious driver, no garage queen) and the guy was asking 32k.
