Virtual Simulation Racing

Just like the title says, any of you guys love simulation racing? I love sim racing, been doing it for close to a decade but been playing racing games since I was a little kid. Started with Need for Speed on the PC and moved up since then. Also played racing games on the Nintendo and Genesis back in the days. During the winter months when there is nothing else to do and bored out of my mind, I'll spend some time playing some sim racing games. Just seeing if anyone else likes it to, yes I am a nerd and don't care. I'll play sim racing games to my grave.

I have been playing Grand Prix Legends since 1998. It's not iRacing, but somehow the GPL community has kept the sim alive for almost 20 years.

Folks have been devoting their time for free to upgrade graphics, sounds, and utilities for it. When it debuted it had as good physics as car manufacturers had in their software. Still pretty good physics wise.

The AI is pretty damn good. Each historical driver (19 are modeled) has individual traits which give their AI representations distinct driving 'personalities'.

I love simulations and I'd say GPL is the most 'simulation' of them all that I have seen. It's hard. many people got turned off by it. But when I can put in 20 laps at Monza without an off or spinning or crashing, I actually feel I accomplished something.

I usually drive the car seen in my sig pic when I race

Never played GPL don't know why. I started actual sim racing with the race series, typically race07 and the gtr expansions for it. I thought it was a great sim game and then played iracing for a few months, boy did I learn a lot with that. Iracing was a swift kick in the a$$ and had to learn how to race again. Right now I play assetto corsa, project cars, and race room experience. All 3 have their ups and downs but the physics are very close. A lot of the people that I race with and against always say that when I want to pass I make the move that they don't expect, mostly it's under braking where lots of people have problems overtaking because they hit the car and go off track. Others say that I pressure them into a mistake because I am right behind them without screwing up.

It's hard today finding people that can race and it's hard finding the time to race.

I do a little iRacing. It's frustrating because I can drive a race car but suck at the sims

This is going to sound snooty...however Need for Speed and games like it are not what I consider "simulations".

iRacing is one of the few simulations that is decent these days. Games like NASCAR that were developed by Papyrus are also simulations.

Games like Need for Speed are to "simulations" the same way games like COD are to FPS games (because of respawning). When you can repeatedly bash other cars, walls and really suffer no consequences...it really just makes it an arcade driving game....much different from a simulator.

That being said, simulators are much more frustrating...especially if you don't have the right equipment (steering wheel, pedals). They are, however, more rewarding once you have the right setup.

Papy made GPL

I have 11 laps at Monza tonight. I need to break out of the 1:30 lap bracket, I could only qualify 12th. I think my problem is the Curva Grande I'm taking 135 mph through the turn. Drivers like Hill are touching 150. But hell, any less rear bar and I may as well unbolt it! Maybe I need to change ramp angles in the diff.

I haven't done iRacing for about 3 years and my subscription has expired.

As far as I'm concerned, everything Papyrus made was awesome.

I may get back into sims, however I'm having fun right now with real cars and real tracks

That's what keeps me away from iRacing. I know nothing's free and they work hard. Plus the Lotus 49 is available.

But my experience with online racing has been 1/2 silly time, 1/4 great, and 1/4 being frustrated, knowing I can't devote the seat time to get to the next rank.

Real racing and sim racing are similar and completely different, with sim you don't get to feel the speed or the G's. The only Papy game I played was nascar 2 back in the days lol. Need for Speed and racing games like that are just for fun and don't take seriously. The games that are in the sim category today are really good. I know I won't be able to race in a series in real life but sim racing gives me that opportunity to do that. Set up a championship series and have some fun. Having a wheel setup is well worth the price and yes more rewarding. I do have the wheel setup with the paddle, H pattern, and sequential shifting and can change with just a switch.

Just came back from the drag strip today and nothing beats that adrenaline rush and going down the 1/4 mile at high speeds. That is something sim racing will never achieve. IRacing is fun and a great place to learn how to sim race, but Assetto Corsa and Race Room Experience delivers close to what IRacing has and for way less. If anyone wants to get into sim racing I would recommend those two games before going into IRacing.

I have an oculus rift on the way primarily for racing. Cant wait to look around as you would on the track. I currently have 3 monitors, and although it helps tremendously over 1 screen, VR is in another league! Need to look into more than pj cars though, no camaros :/

The huge advantage to sim racing is that while I can never afford to buy a 1967 Lotus 49 with a Ford/Cosworth DFV, or even sit in one, I can race it in a sim.

And I want to point out that on this day, June 18 1967, Dan Gurney drove the car in my sig pic to victory at the Grand Prix of Belgium, Spa-Francorchamps. He won the race by over one minute and set a lap record at the track in the process. His top speed was 196 mph. No seatbelts.

I was a huge fan of Motor City Online. I miss that one. As for the consoles, I like the arcade racers and NFS series. I really would like to see a NFS Underground 3 for the PS4.

I played MCO but it was for fun. Was a lot of fun.

But definitely not a simulation of any kind. The setups that you had to use were fantasy land. rear anti-roll bars larger diameter than the front were quite necessary.

The developers had not a single flipping idea about cars other than they were cool. Still, I had a lot of fun with that.

I have Assetto Corsa and Project Cars on my Laptop . Also Played Grand Tourismo 5 & 6 on the PS2 & 3 . Now I've been playing Forsa 6 .

Started with Need for Speed but it doesn't compare to any of these .
