Five Grades of Gas at One Pump!

I finally got back to that station in Orlando that had five grades of gas. This time I photographed the pricing. Nowhere on the pump does it mention it's blending two grades to come up with five grades but I doubt they have five different tanks. I didn't think to look this time.

Here in PA where I live, we've always had four. 87, 89. 91, and 93.

Never heard of Special 88. Interesting. If they don't have different detergency between them then I have to assume they are just blending in some fashion.

Man... you can't tell me you don't get a gulp full of mixed gas when pumping that 93. Last guy could have filled up a lawnmower, then you ride up taking in some of that...

I was told by a tanker driver not take waste your time on mid grades.....there isn't enough octane to make a difference and its more money then regular. Either regular or 91 octane or higher.

Why is it that some people think a tanker driver is specifically qualified to discuss how octane content applies to performance applications? Just because they deliver the fuel doesn't automatically mean that they know anything about it. They're truck drivers. Sure, some of them may know a thing or two, but your average automotive hobbyist is already more qualified to talk about octane just on principle alone than a truck driver is.

Where I live it's 87 89 or 91 most common sometimes 93. The difference between 87 and 89 is how much? 89 isn't considered premium....so where does mid grade far into place?

Reminds me of Sunoco as a kid. Had a dial selector. Kind of like that button in an elevator
>< that makes you "think" it's closing the doors faster. Only there to make you feel better about your selection. But blending is an interesting hypothesis.

What would be the purpose of having 88 and 89 mid-grades? 1 octane doesn't seem like it would do anything except cost more money.

My car runs fine on regular. I have noticed that it gets slightly better mileage on Mobil gas vs. Shell or Amoco. It's not a huge difference but it is a little better.

I am sure they are blending gas for the 88 and 91. The giveaway is the two tone colors of the octanes from the left and right of them. Also, no reason for that many octanes. Stick with the usual 87, 89, and 93.

I personally only use 93 in all my vehicles. Cars seem to run better and get better MPG.

Buy the car that you would most like to get beat in. The other guy will always be faster.
