That article is complete trash. Yahoo.com posted up the same thing.

These cars all did good with a small exception to the Challenger.

Don't know why they had to destroy V8 models, should have used base models.

I purchased mine because of how well it goes from 0 to 150 not for how well it goes from 150 to 0.

Does anyone honestly care about crash test when buying a new car? Their main concern is looks, price and performance are their first consideration, crash test are usually a secondary concern to a majority of buyers.

Most people probably take a 'safe enough' approach to cars. Otherwise, Volvo who built their reputation on safety would have dominated the entire automotive market. But there are some that prioritize safety over most other factors. Most commonly, safety people are looking for family vehicles (so minivans, midsize cars, crossovers). But that doesn't mean safety is the top priority for everyone in those buying segments ... just that its more likely a safety buyer will be shopping within those segments.

However, with in the general category of 'performance cars', I'd say that safety is essentially never a differentiation between competing products. As you said, price, performance, styling dominate. Smaller things like fuel economy and interior features/comfort play lesser role. But crash ratings probably ranks behind the specific length, width, and depth of the trunk in terms of importance.

I do. It's one of the things I look at before I purchase. It's one of the reasons I got a Camaro- for a sports coupe it gets very good safety ratings.

The insurance industry does this to justify and set insuance rates. Sure they are independent as far as mfg goes but to help the insurance industry charge more... Probably not so unbiased.

For a performance I agree. However the I4 and V6 models are not performance cars. Those models are more likely to get cross shopped with an Accord coupe and for at least some of those customers safety matters. But I have no idea how well the I4 does in the same test.

Crash test ratings are one of the tools auto makers use as a selling feature for new cars. When a family is starting out and looking at a new car or van what do you think the salesman is using as a selling point..5 star crash ratings. Alot of cars do have this because safety is now front and centre right beside quality.
