To put into context just how cheap this system is, there are actually factory running boards offered for the trucks that cost more than the eAssist option.

One thing that has me scratching my head with this is the extremely limited availability.

500 Silverados & 200 Sierras, to be sold in California only.

Doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. Even if its to meet some sort of California mandate ... once you pay for the R&D, wouldn't it make more sense to do a widespread release on it?

They could, and VW could produce and sell quality diesels here also but the EPA and CAFE aren't having any of that. I assume there's also more at work than what is being shown that's holding diesel development back.

Historically, the mild hybrids and the Two-Mode Hybrids haven't exactly sold all that well. GM's probably reluctant to do a larger rollout until they're sure the demand is there.

Diesel pumps at gas stations aren't EVERYWHERE you know

If there is more demand for these things than 700 units total, they might as well sell it across the states. None of GM's truck based hybrids sold particularly well, but what they will do now is a good attempt at starting again, but I wish that it would not be in limited production runs though.
