Direct injection puts the fuel directly into the combustion chamber. The valves are only opening and closing to move air and by products of combustion. While that is efficient, it doesn't allow for the fuel to keep the plenum and back of valves clean from oil blowby. Thus a catch can becomes very important to catch as much oil as it can to keep the plenum and back of valves clean.

Lol direct injection engines are notorious for this... Has nothing to do with the fuel.

I did the numbers , and if you had paid for the gas yourself for 140000 miles at 25 miles /gallon = to 5600 gallons , X $0,35 different between ( TOP) tier BS , and the lower shelf gas = to $1680 savings - $1200 to fix the engine , you still ahead by $480
Just take those $480 and take your lady for a nice Valentines Day dinner
You will be surprised what that can do for the two of you !
Good job, but we are lucky enough that her company buys her gasoline!

An Oil Catch Can is a device that allows PCV gases to enter the catch can before feeding into the intake (and across the valves), allowing oil vapors to condense and collect in the can instead of down the ports, causing buildup.

With DI engines, the dirty vapors coming from the PCV system are leaving deposits on the valves, and there is no fuel being sprayed across the valves to keep them clean (fuel wash).
Thank you, seems simple enough that they should be doing this.

Are not all the new (2010 +) Camaros DFI? A catch can was the first thing I bought. Installing it this weekend.

Now that the VW's clean OP, put a catch can on it.

The LFX engine is DI, but I don't think the SS and above trim levels are DI.

I'm pretty sure that the 2016 DI models do come with a factory catch can. It took about 3 years before GM caught up with replacing their faulty PVC valve design in the first place, lol.

I know for a fact the 6.2L LS3 is not direct cylinder injected. It is "Direct Port" injection, not direct cylinder injection. Two different things. In the direct port injection the fuel is sprayed in the intake runner right above the valve.

A catch can cannot completely fix the direct cylinder injection problem, but it will certainly help. I think even if the PCV and clean side were vented to the atmosphere, the valves would still get buildup, maybe at a slower rate though. So a catch can will help, for sure. Won't solve the problem though

Yeah, the buildup isn't caused entirely by PCV and crankcase gases, so you'll still get valve gunk with the best possible catch can, but it's a damn good bit of preventative maintenance, and definitely better than nothing!

Of course the VW service department is gonna say that, they would never admit that it's a design flaw.

Their customer base expects and are used to cars needing nothing for the first 200,000 miles.

Interesting discussion. I would just like to point out that the correct acronym for Positive Crankcase Ventilation is PCV. PVC is Polyvinyl Chloride and is a plastic-like material used to make modern day water piping and other items.
