Wow how could I forget about the Grand Canyon.. thats definantly on the list as well as other suggestions.. I am taking them all . Yellowstone.. the mountains.. I want to check out the whole north west too.. I noticed not too many suggestions for the south... its ok Im not in a rush for heat =)

I was supposed to take a trip to flagstaff a couple years ago but missed it.. so I might have seen teh canyon then.

or why don't you get a map and throw 4 darts and see where they end up!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Honestly thats the best idea. I'm dead serious. I'll get a dart board, put the names of all the places to visit and just throw darts (which I am horrible at, so I can't aim for any particular one) and wherever it lands i go next =)

my wife and I did a great trip a few years back. We flew into Vegas, rented an Eclipse convertible and drove up to Reno, over to San Francisco, down the coast to San Diego, over to the Grand Canyon and back to Vegas. You have to take the coast from San Fran, I think it was mostly US 1, through the Pebble Beach area. Very cool drive with a lot of different types of scenery. I wouldn't suggest trying to sleep in an Eclipse in by the Grand Canyon when it is barely above freezing. Kind of hard to snuggle in those things. I'd like to make the trip in my Camaro...which should be here today!

Otherwise, make the Lake Michigan Circle Tour (Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan), very cool drive!

I think there ought to be a law that every American should see the Grand Canyon. Went there a few years ago on vacation and it was incredible. Standing on the rim looking into millions of years right there before your eyes is almost like a deeply religious experience, literally breath-taking for me. Still kicking myself that back when we lived in Phoenix for 5 years never made it up there.
Also since you're in the area Meteor Crater National Park is very cool, and the Petrified Forest National Park as well.

I went there a few years ago and I was completely unimpressed. Same thing with Yellowstone when I went there.

same here. I didn't think it was that great. but maybe that's just because i only did one of those day-tours with a bus from las vegas that stop at two places and you can walk around for an hour. but all you do basically is look into a big hole

Really the best way to take in the Grand Canyon is to hike it.... When you look at it from up top its cool but it is so big it almost escapes you that your looking at a canyon and not just another valley. When you get down into it.... thats when you can really appreciate that the whole thing is made from water and wind.

Me too! Especially in the fall, the Smoky Moutains are wonderful. Just avoid the winter, we went in January and when coming off the mountain, hit some black ice. Not fun!!!

As others have said, Grand Canyon....I don't see how you can go to the GC and not be impressed lol.

But then:
*Yellowstone Nat'l park plus Grand Tetons (see both sides). Yellowstone Park really is pretty cool.
*A puddle jumper flight into any national wilderness area- there are hundreds- but being 100 miles from a road of any kind. I like to go to Frank Church Wilderness on the Continental divide personally- but it's more the idea of being so far away from everything but still in the U.S.
*San Juan Islands Washington to see the Orca's plus Olympic National Park- which is a true rainforest and it's pretty much 100% green. Everything, rocks roots- everywhere. Have you ever stared at something green then you look away and see a red afterimage? On a bright day you get that there.
*Alaska- Denali Nat'l Park. and Kenai Fjords. If you hunt and or fish, there are a whole bunch of other areas to recommend.
*Needles and Moab (pretty close to grand canyon). Mountain Bike in Moab if you can. Moab is sort of touristy now for bike riding, but it's still amazing.

I don't know, list kind of goes on and on . I want to go to Area 51 too lol- just so I can say I've been there.

Hocking hills state park in Ohio. The roads are a complete blast. Scenary is beautiful and the hiking trails are great
