Much better to use the Gerix wifi cracker GUI tool in Kali linux. Works faster and more reliably with a larger rainbow table database out the box. Still uses aircrack at the base but Gerix allows you to use mac changer to cover your tracks and allows the collection of packets to crack the wireless key without having to open a terminal hardly as much. Just my $0.02 .

Provided you only run into an issue if you get caught, it's not something you should do everywhere. Other than that it's always fun making money by betting your buddy you can crack your way into his wireless network. Even more fun once you learn to take it further.

My parents basically just told me as long as they have an idea of where I am, and im not doing or dealing drugs that I can handle myself. lol

You can still brute force but unfortunately things have progressed beyond the simple setups so brute forcing takes FOREVER lol. I think Kevin Mitnick still had the best way of doing things. Finding out information on his targets and socially engineering his way into whatever he wanted. IMHO best there has ever been in the business. Man got his way inside the networks of over 50 fortune 500 companies and was on the run being on the FBI's most wanted list for over 2 years in the 90's before he was arrested in NC. Spent 6 out of 7 years (if I remember correctly) in solitary confinement because the judge was convinced he could launch nukes by whistling a launch code tune into a phone.

My parents are about the same. Pretty strict but I know they worry. As long as I live under their roof, I follow their rules...... If i dont like it i can move out. I think it's a fair trade.
